Winter always seems to arrive with a double punch.
First comes the cold weather. Then comes the power bill.
Suddenly everyone is fighting over blankets, the washing refuses to dry, the bathroom feels like an icebox and you’re wondering whether turning on the heater is going to cost more than your weekly grocery shop.
The good news is that preparing your home for winter doesn’t have to mean spending a fortune.
In fact, some of the smartest winter purchases can actually help reduce heating costs, make your home more comfortable and save you money throughout the colder months.
Whether you’re trying to keep the kids warm, tackle damp laundry or make winter dinners easier, these are the winter essentials that Australian families are actually buying and using right now.
1. Start With the Cheapest Warmth Upgrade: Your Bed
If you’re waking up freezing every morning, your bedding should be the first thing you upgrade.
Too many families rely on running heaters all night when a better solution is simply creating a warmer sleeping environment.
Flannelette sheets, quality doonas and mattress toppers can make a huge difference. But if you’re in a particularly cold area, an electric blanket is one of the most affordable ways to stay warm overnight.
The Snuggy Black Electric Blanket is designed to keep beds warm through cold nights without needing to heat the entire room.
For couples, the Dreamaker Double White Washable Electric Blanket features adjustable heat settings and a machine-washable design that makes winter comfort even easier.
A warmer bed often means you’re less tempted to leave the heater running overnight, which can make a noticeable difference to your electricity bill over an entire winter.
2. Heat the Room You Use, Not the Whole House
One of the biggest mistakes families make during winter is trying to heat the entire house.
Unless you live in a tiny home, that’s often the fastest way to send your energy bill through the roof.
Instead, focus on heating the spaces you’re actually using.
For bedrooms and smaller living areas, the De’Longhi Ceramic Panel Convector Heater with Electronic Timer 1500W provides efficient everyday warmth and includes timer controls to help avoid unnecessary energy use.
If you need something for larger family spaces, the De’Longhi Ceramic Tower Fan Heater 2000W distributes warmth throughout the room and is ideal for busy living areas where everyone tends to gather.
For families who prefer the gentle, steady warmth of oil heating, both the De’Longhi Radia S Oil Column Heater with Timer 1000W and the De’Longhi Dragon 4 Oil Column Heater provide consistent warmth without making the room feel dry.
For studies, nurseries or spare bedrooms, the compact De’Longhi HCM2030 Portable Convection Heater is a practical option.

Another affordable choice is the De’Longhi Panel Convector Heater with Manual Timer 2000W, which is designed for fast room heating without taking up too much space.
3. The Winter Laundry Problem Nobody Talks About
One of the most frustrating parts of winter isn’t the cold.
It’s the washing.
The same load that dries in a few hours during summer can sit damp for days during winter.
Many families end up running clothes dryers constantly, which can significantly increase energy costs.
A better option is creating a dedicated indoor drying area.
The Solwyn 173cm Grey Foldable Clothes Drying Rack provides plenty of drying space while folding away neatly when not in use.
If damp washing is creating condensation and moisture problems around the home, the De’Longhi Tasciugo AriaDry Multi Dehumidifier 14L can help remove excess moisture while reducing the risk of mould and mildew.
4. Make Winter Mornings Less Miserable
Stepping out of a hot shower into a freezing bathroom should honestly be classified as a form of torture.
One surprisingly practical winter upgrade is a heated towel rail.
The Devanti Heated Towel Rail Electric Warmer Heater Rails Holder Rack Wall Mounted keeps towels warm and ready for those chilly mornings.
For larger households, the Devanti Electric Heated Towel Rail Rails Warmer Rack Aluminium 6 Bars provides even more drying and warming space.
They’re one of those purchases that sound indulgent until you’ve used one for a week.
Then you’ll never want to go back.
5. Winter Comfort Food Starts With the Right Appliances
Winter is soup season.
It’s casserole season.
It’s the season of hearty family dinners that warm everyone up after a long day.
The problem is that cooking these meals can sometimes feel like hard work when life is already busy.
For stews, curries and one-pot family dinners, the CeraPro Electric Cooker is designed specifically for easy comfort cooking.
Families looking to reduce oven use may also love the EUROCHEF 6.5L Air Fryer or the versatile PowerXL Air Fryer Oven for quick winter dinners, roast vegetables and family favourites.
6. Keep Yourself Warm Before Heating the House
One of the simplest ways to reduce winter heating costs is to stay warm personally before reaching for the thermostat.
Layer your clothing.
Wear socks.
Use throw rugs.
And when you’re settling in for a movie night, nothing beats a heated throw.
The Nima Blue Heated Throw Blanket is perfect for staying cosy on the couch while potentially reducing how often you need to run larger heaters.
Final Thoughts
Preparing your home for winter isn’t about buying everything on the shelves.
It’s about making a few smart upgrades that help your family stay warmer, more comfortable and potentially save money throughout the colder months.
From efficient heaters and electric blankets to dehumidifiers, drying racks and comfort-food appliances, the right winter essentials can make a surprisingly big difference.

Vapourisers are so great! I find them really relaxing too.
Having really fluffy bed socks is also a good idea, I love the different colours you can get them in too. They are really cheap in the Mother’s Day sales. I leave a really big throw rug in the car so whenever my Toddler feels cold he can put it over himself. This may even help kids to sleep in the car. Xo
