5 Quick and Easy Homemade Dog Food Recipes

5 min read

It’s easy to make homemade dog food – it just takes a bit of planning and a big cook up!

Most dogs get a mixture of canned or dried dog food, most of which contains artificial flavours and preservatives that can affect dogs as much as they affect humans. Most commercial dog food and treats also contain fillers, flours, grains or cereals that are not only unnecessary in a dog’s diet, but are also difficult for a dog to digest.

Homemade dog food is an excellent way to make sure your dog has all the goodness they need, without the additives they don’t need!

1. Basic Homemade Dog Food Recipe

This is the simplest version of homemade dog food!

  • 1kg of turkey mince
  • 2 cups of brown rice
  • 6 cups of water
  • 1kg frozen mixed vegetables

Place all the ingredients into a large stock pot mix until combined.  Allow it to come up to the boil, then place a lid on the pot and reduce the heat and simmer for 20 minutes.

Then bag the homemade dog food into ziplock bags.

2. The Fart Free Dog Food Recipe

This recipe has been around forever and is really the go-to recipe for when making dog food at home.  It is also gentle on dogs tummies so no stinky farts!

  • 1.5 cups brown rice, slightly over-cooked
  • 2 carrots, grated
  • 1 zucchini, grated
  • 1kg turkey or chicken mince
  • 1 bunch of silverbeet or spinach, roughly chopped

Cook the brown rice according to the instructions and allow it to cool.  Cook up the mince and the vegetables in a frypan until JUST cooked (or even a tad on the pink side).  Mix well and store in a sealed container. Feed your dog one large cup for every meal.

Note:  Larger breed dogs tend to get bloated after ingesting pasta or rice as it tends to continue expanding in the stomach  So make sure you really cook it well – or slightly over-cook it.

3. The Spoilt Dog Vegetable Mix

  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1kg pet mince
  • 2 tablespoons coconut or chickpea flour
  • 2 carrots, peeled and diced
  • 2 stalks celery, diced
  • 4 cups of reduced-salt beef stock
  • 10 florets of broccoli
  • 10 green beans, cut into 2cm lengths
  • 1 cup of chopped spinach or silverbeet
  • 1/2 small pumpkin, diced

In a large saucepan, heat the oil on medium and fry the carrots and celery together for 2 minutes. Add the mince and cook until browned. Stir in the flour, and then immediately add the beef stock. Bring to the boil, and then add the remaining vegetables. Reduce the heat, and simmer until the gravy has thickened and the vegetables are soft.

Makes 10 serves for a small/medium dog.

4. High Energy Dog Food for Working Dogs and Active Dogs

  • 1kg chicken mince
  • 2 cups rolled oats
  • 1 cup brown rice, cooked
  • 1 zucchini
  • 5 cups of water
  • 1 cup salt reduced chicken stock

In a large pot, cook together the chicken mince, 5 cups of water and the chicken stock.  Cook until the meat is fully cooked through.  Soak the rolled oats in 3 cups of boiling water until fully expanded.  Add the cooked rice and the grated vegetables.

Place in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

5. Frozen Fruit Treats for Dogs

  • 1 apple, stewed
  • 1 pear, stewed
  • 1 banana

Blend together all ingredients in a food processor. Freeze in ice cube trays.

Dogs enjoy frozen treats, especially on hot days, so you could also try freezing peanut butter, or salt-reduced stock with boiled vegetables.

6. Puppy Biscuits

  • 2 cups flour (plain)
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 1 tablespoon fish oil

Mix everything together, add enough water to make a dough, then bake teaspoons of rolled dough in the oven for 10 minutes.

The dental chews come in so many flavours:
