This is a quick and easy craft idea that can be used in many projects!

Materials:

  • ziplock bags (sandwich size)
  • water
  • food colourings
  • rice (uncooked)

Instructions:

Put 2 Tablespoons of water into a ziplock bag.  Add 3-4 drops of food colouring and mix. Add 1 cup rice to the ziplock bag. Close securely and shake.  Add more food colouring depending on desired colour. Dry on a plate or in a dish for 2-3 days (stir occasionally).

The rice will keep indefinitely. It is easy to clean up with a vacuum or broom. Store in a container with a lid to keep it neat!

Ideas for the dry coloured rice:

- shakers
- use in place of sand (sand table, pouring, measuring, etc)
- use PVA glue on paper to create textured pictures
- layer colours in a jar
- use spoons, cups, bowls, shovels, buckets, etc, to do tipping and pouring

Cassy is a busy mother of three boys aged under four who is currently on maternity leave from being a primary school teacher and is a little obsessed with cooking.
