The One Plus One

By Jojo Moyes

Reviewed by Jody Allen

The plot of The One Plus One sounds truly boring – down and out lady meets rich guy that turns out not to be rich and they embark on the road trip from hell. The main character, Jess, is a hardworking single mum with two kids. She accepts an offer from Ed, a millionaire who she works for, to drive herself and her children across the country to the Math Olympiad. And so begins the road trip….

However, turns out, I couldn’t put this book down. It wasn’t predictableone-plus-one-the, it was truly authentic. I couldn’t t help but feel for the characters – the single Mum that works heaps of jobs just to keep food on the table, who will do anything for her kids and the rich dodgy dude that ‘doesn’t think with his head’.These characters are developed extremely well and Jojo does a terrific job of putting the reader into the characters shoes. I laughed, cried and cringed (a lot) throughout this book.

Recommend It?

Yes definitely! A must read in fact. It’s a great book for Mums with kids who can identify with the hard work of raising children.

This is the first novel by Jojo Moyes I have read and I will endeavour to seek out more of her work. You can buy the book (at 20% off and with free delivery) and review it yourself through our Stay at Home Mum Book Club.  I’d love to know what you thought of it! Have you ever read any other books by Jojo Moyes? Any recommendations on the next one I should read?
