Salt dough is a very easy craft material to make at home, using items you should already have in your pantry! The uses of salt dough are almost endless… bowls, cups, figurines, letters, wall plaques, plates… and beads are a great way to help foster fine motor skills through sculpting, painting and threading.

  • 1 cup salt
  • 2 cups plain flour
  • (up to) 1 cup warm water
  • paintbrush or pencil
  • food colourings
  • paints
  • varnish (optional)

Mix salt and flour in a large bowl. Slowly stir in warm water until a thick consistency is achieved. More or less water may be required.  (Optional) Add a few drops of food colouring. This will create coloured salt dough.

Knead for at least 5 minutes. The longer you knead it, the smoother it will be. Form into beads, use paintbrush or pencil to poke a hole through the middle for threading. Bake at 100˚C for 2-3 hours, until completely dry. Cool and paint. Varnish.
