Beat. Heart. Beat. I am 34 years old and I am worried about having a heart attack. Worried that I will suddenly die, without warning my life will end. For me, I have reason to be concerned, my mother passed away from a heart attack at the tender age of 36 and now I am 34. Tick. Tick. Tick….time is ticking and I feel like I am a ticking time bomb. I guess it is the same for people who have had to endure loved ones with cancer or another disease that can have a hereditary component, constantly asking themselves the question – when will I get it? Will their fate be mine?
Will my mother’s fate be mine?
Here is the thing, women’s heart attack symptoms can be different from the traditional signs that people might know about, chest pain, arm pain, jaw pain. They can be subtle, easy to ignore until it is too late. Women need to know this. They need to know what to look out for. Why does being a woman have to be so damn hard?
I have three daughters and I am desperate to see them grow up, I don’t want them to be motherless daughters. I know what it is like and let me tell you, it isn’t fun. There is no other love like a mothers love and I just don’t want my girls to miss out on that. At 34 years old, I shouldn’t have to worry about this, I wish I didn’t have to worry about this. But I do.
So, off to the Cardiologist I go for a full stress echo to see if there have been any changes from my last one two years ago. I have my appointment in two weeks and I am anxious about it. The closer I get to my mother’s age of death the more anxious I get. I’m sure it is just natural, right? Or I might just be slightly crazy.
It is so easy to become complacent with important things like diet and exercise and I go through stages of eating ridiculously healthy and exercising every day to not being concerned at all! I need to find a balance and I need to find it quick smart. I’ve got the tools, look at my cook book collection and I have the all the healthy heart cook books, I’ve got the time to walk 30 minutes a day – I just have to keep my motivation at a constant level. It needs to be a priority in my life, it really does and in recent times it hasn’t been. Life gets busy, I am a mum to three children, the youngest being 4 months old but I can’t use this as an excuse. It is as easy as putting back the chocolate biscuits and grabbing an apple. I want to be around for my girls, so therefore I have to make time for my health. We all do.
Look after your heart. Know your numbers. Get your doctor to check your cholesterol and blood pressure. Make time for exercise, be conscience of what you eat and de-stress your life. Oh those words are easier said than done, don’t I know it. Women’s heart health is a very important issue and we need to start talking about it, for our kid’s sake.
Beat strong my beating heart, please.
