There comes a time where your baby will want to experiment with food and feed him/herself.  This usually occurs around the nine month mark (give or take) when they have semi-mastered the hand to mouth action.  Of course babies are also excellent at the hand to floor action too – so invest in something like a messy mat or similar before undertaking the ‘mess fest’ that will inevitably occur!  Offering finger foods to babies is a great way to let them discover foods for themselves!

Letting your baby feed themselves is terrific for hand-eye coordination, development and experimenting with different foods from this age will hopefully encourage an acceptance of all sorts of new foods! Hopefully!

But what to try?  Here are some suggestions for you to try.  For best results – place a few different kinds of finger food on a plate so your baby can help himself.  Make sure you watch him carefully to avoid choking on a new food.

Ingredients:

  •  Teething Rusks
  • Soft Fruit pieces such as banana, strawberries or watermelon (minus skin and seeds)
  • Small pieces of cheese (over 12 months)
  • Pasta pieces such as penne cooked and cooled
  • Hard boiled eggs, peeled and quartered
  • Steamed and cooled vegetable pieces such as broccoli, carrot and pumpkin
  • Pikelets
  • Lean chicken pieces off the bone
  • Pieces of toast cut into soldiers with toppings like vegemite or jam
  • Cooled spaghetti bolognaise with the spaghetti cut up (pack it full of grated veggies!)
  • Yogurt – it’s easy to make yourself at home, just cut down the sugar content!
  • Porridge – yes it’s messy but it’s packed full of goodness for a growing baby!
We will continually add to this list so check back here for new ideas!  Got a few suggestions to add?  Let us know!
