What's a fast, effective over the counter med to help me sleep?

Answered 5 years ago

I struggle to switch my brain off yet am exhausted. I've been trying meditating, visualisation and essential oils.
Now out of desperation I'm looking for suggestions on pharmaceuticals.
Any suggestions are welcome.
Thank you.

This has often been found to be the only effective calming remedy for ADHD kids. Something about re-creating the comfort of the constriction of being in the womb. Might sound weird, but apparently effective.

What I have found that really helped me is a large mug of hot chocolate, made with milk, not water, about an hour before bed. Its an old remedy.

This is particularly true if your brain is whizzing like a top. You have to make sure your body is tired enough to override the brains activity. I know so many men where this is a major problem. They sleep like a top when they have done a day of physical work, and cant sleep when they haven't. This is a real modern problem when so many jobs are desk jobs, with high stress but low physical activity.

For about 5 years, I've barely slept. I have chronic insomnia, most nights I have trouble getting & staying asleep. Due to emotional stress, I find it very hard to switch off.

You can get sleeping tablets from the chemist without a script, 24 tabs for $15. You'll need one or two tablets, try one first. While they do work, I found they made me groggy in the morning & it took me a while to 'wake up'. The tablets are just for short term. I got some better sleeping tablets from the doctor, where i didn't wake up groggy. The doc will ask whether you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. Also, I've heard some people try Fernergan, not sure if that's spelt right - it's a hayfever tablet, antihistamine. I don't take any tablets regularly, maybe once a month.
