Week old newborn constipated?

Answered 5 years ago

My 7 day old newborn gets really bad gas and gets badly constipated.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
She is formula fed, she is on Nan comfort and drinks from tommee tippee bottles.
Just in case “Why didn’t you breast feed” BECAUSE MY TITTIES DONT WORK!!
Thanks :)

Your baby is only 7 days old. You haven’t even given your boobs a chance to produce . Can’t your pump and supplement ?

This was my first thought. Boobs don’t just not work. 7 days is not enough time.

Not hating either. I have both formula fed and breastfed my kids but I really hate the lack of true information out in regards to breastfeeding. Innaccurate information and inadequate support in one of the major reasons people ‘give up’ breastfeeding before they truly want to.

Same issue with my second, we tried everything, change of formula, sugar water, gripe water, coloxyl drops.
We became so desperate, we got a cotton bud, covered the top in Vaseline and gently inserted it into her bottom and rotated it gently. The first third of the poo was so hard and when it becomes like that, all other methods don't work.
This helped and we had to do it once a week for several months until we got her off formula and milk all together. It was absolutely terrible hearing her cry and writhe in pain

Please do not insert anything into a babies bottom. Go to your doctor or a hospital.

^that's fine, but people should be getting their own doctor's opinion.

Remember that changing formula isn't an instant fix either, they say to give it 2 weeks or at least a reasonable amount of time for baby's body to adjust to the change first. I'd be speaking to a gp or someone with correct advice.

Does the formula have extra iron? If so, switch to one that isn’t. The iron will constipate your baby.

Newborns aren't considered constipated until 4-5 days without a bm (longer of breastfed). The gassiness could be indicative of a problem with the type of formula you're using. My son needed a rice based, low iron (read very expensive) type of formula. My boobs didn't work either; these jugs are empties. Try talking to your midwife, child nurse, or pediatrician about options.

I had that issue with my first. I found it was the formula. We ended up switching brands and bubs settled.

Hear you Sista.....I couldnt breastfeed either of my kids and they are perfect 😍 my daughter was the same as your little one.. our midwife had us put kids inner health plus powder in with her formula (she was on Nan gold) it worked really well, check with your child health nurse/pharmacist for the correct doseage. Fingers crossed this will work for your bubba. Hang in there x

Sorry about your boobs darl. Mine didn't work either. Poor bubba. Could it be the formula?

Ring the midwife or Mother/Child Health nurse who was assigned to you- that is what they are there for. If you are feeling desperate until then though, send someone to woolies for some gripe water/infants friend. It is in the baby section and I don’t know if it helped my bub or not, (very gassy girl!) but it at least made me feel like I was doing something for her. You could also try tummy time, warm bath, gentle baby massage (YouTube will give an idea) and bicycle their little legs gently. Good luck!

I would suggest getting advice from your Dr or maternal and child health nurse for such a young baby.
My son had really bad gas and sometimes explosive poos then sometimes constipated. Turns out he was dairy intolerant. I was breastfeed so I just had to cut out dairy but it took a while to work it out so maybe something to keep in mind if you can't get on top of the constipation
