It's not a life changing amount for us. When we get unexpected money, tax returns, anything, whether it be a few hundred or a thousands we ask 'where does it need to go?'. It's usually some to travel savings, most to mortgage, sometimes to maintenance stuff.
You'd be surprised how many people immediately brag what they'll spend extra $$ on without thought for paying off debt etc.

I often don’t tell people or post on social media that I have randomly packed the kids off to the beach for the weekend because I found a bookings.com special while sitting on the toilet on Thursday night, they would think I am bragging but really I would rather bugger off to the beach then clean my house over the weekend

10k is not a lot of money. Not life changing at all. But it might be for someone really struggling?
I would pretty much pay off a chunk of my mortgage with it.

For me $10k would be life changing. I currently have almost $9.5k in savings, having that sitting there means I’m no longer throwing up when a bill comes in, or crying myself to sleep because I don’t know when I won’t be able to rent and feed myself. $10k is a lot to someone who doesn’t have much.

First off I'd try to find out whom I inherited it from.
Then, I don't know. I suppose I'd buy myself a little car. I don't have one. My husband has a big 4wd but I can't drive it (fuck manual transmissions, they're too complicated for my simple brain).
So a small second hand car, or even a deposit on a new car would be great. A little hyundai or something.

I inherited $10k recently. I've put it in the redraw of one of my mortgages but plan to use $5k to buy a little pop up caravan for family holidays. I'll maybe use the other $5k to start Reno's but not sure yet

So I agree it's really not that much money, but to someone who has very little it would make a huge difference.
Personally I would probably put it in an emergency fund as I don't have one of those. My pay comes in, I pay all my bills, rent, fuel etc and then I have no Money left but I don't my necessities are covered and I'm not going to be homeless or have anything repossessed or switched off, but then it makes it hard to save extra money for an emergency fund if there's no extra money, so that's what I'd do with it ☺

I inherited 70k a few years ago and I still have a bit left. It really helped at the time but every time I spent money, I remembered why I came to get it in the first place 😢

Pretty soon the bank will be charging you interest to let you place it there, if we get another rate cut or two we will be into negative interest territory.
