Taking your child’s adhd medication.

Answered 5 years ago

So your kid has been diagnosed with adhd. They have been put on medication. Your curious as to how this drug may work?? So you decide to sample some for yourself. What happens next....in my experience, my house has never been cleaner! 🤣 seeing my child on this drug is polar opposites to what I have felt so I know he needs them for school especially.

Which medication was it? I’m medicated for ADHD and I’ve always found it strange that people take ADHD meds recreationally but I suppose that’s just because I’m not neurotypical. I was brought up thinking Ritalin and speed were the same thing so when I was given my first prescription I thought it must’ve been a placebo 🤣

Didn't you do your research before giving it to yor child?

I don't know exactly how but it has the opposite effect on people with ADHD.

REPLY

Because true ADHD people are hypo but the medication works on their brain to calm them something to do with overactive neurons. It’s why normal people who take it have a reaction like taking speed.

Thats why the "Just testing it before my kid has it" excuse is pathetic, you are not going to have the same reaction as your child.

Wow everyone, calm the f**k down hey?!
I know with us, we had to start with the fast acting ritalin, then go to the slow acting, then ended up on a different kind of medication.
So we ended up with a heap of left over ritalin. So the OP most likely wasn't depriving her child. Plus she obviously knows how serious the meds are, thus why she wanted to try it, to get a better understanding of what her child was going through.

It doesn’t work like that. It obviously has a very different effect on her than it would on her child. Don’t downplay this. Taking prescribed meds that aren’t yours is really, really stupid. Absolutely nothing to brag about.

Its how addiction starts, I know 3 mothers who are meth addicts thanks to taking dexies. Everyone thinks they aren't that bad because they are prescribed meds and kids can take them but thats wrong.

I understand it effects those with ADHD differently to those without it. But the side effects would be similar (nausea, loss of appetite, sleep disruptions). So maybe the OP wanted to see how "bad" it was?
And if there are so many Mums becoming addicts from sampling their childrens meds, how come it is deemed safe for our children to have?

^again, no. Not everyone will experience side effects or the same side effects. So that would be an exercise in futility.

I would say those mothers becoming addicted from their kids medicine are taking way too much, and way too often. And another reason why you don’t take what isn’t described to you.

If you’re still in doubt about whether or not trying your child’s medeicstion is a wise idea, talk to your doctor and see what they think about it.

It is addictive. Its meant to be a long term medication so I guess people with Adhd only have to deal with it when they come off

Another reason why taking unprescibed medication is a bad idea is... unless you’re a trained medical professional, how would you know what contra indications there are with medication you’re already taking. Or with any medical conditions you might already have?

Cheers for your reply. As u stated I certainly did Not deplete my sons supply. I knew that this would probably not affect me in the same way (used for intended purposes, it is a stimulant that kicks my adhd son working memory into gear, such as focus, memory detention and a synthetic hormone that his fantastic brain does not produce) I was more interested in seeking out side effects fundamentally so I can help see the signs of him experiencing them. I knew it would not harm me Nor is it addictive! To me or my son, no withdrawals that I have noticed in him what so ever ( I’ve chosen not to medicate him on weekends and most holidays) I only tried it the once and did not feel any need to do it again. It gave me the answers I was looking for in regards to what it is like for him. Thanks

You have you answers on what the effects are like for you. But not for your son. Everyone experiences side effects and efficacy of ALL medications different

How is it thT this drug can calm down a child that is over hyped, but for someone that is ‘normal’ or ‘calm’ it sends them hyper? I just don’t understand this part

It has something to do with regulating the impulses in your brain, people with too many impulses will be calmed down, people who are normally calm may be sped up a bit.

In layman’s terms imagine a brain that is on “speed” 24/7, without any narcotic reason. They don’t have the right hormonal balance nor receptors in place to balance it out. Ritalin or dexamphatamine do the job for them. Everyone is different, so it takes time to get the balence right.

It’s addictive and dangerous - aka speed. WHat answer were you looking for? Let alone a prescription that is regulated so you son can’t get it until a specific time again so if you run out - he goes without. It’s illegal as well.

Yeh, ok I get exactly what your saying. However it is not addictive on a physical sense such as antidepressants or bloody heroin. And I took it once. Once only, no need to do it again. Your kid has taken Panadol right? You made that choice as you knew what it felt like to take.. I’m not saying the drugs are the same of course, but when you gave it to them you knew what the outcome would be and we’re aware of potential side effects. I assure you, that’s all I was doing.

My mum did this back in the late 90’s when my brother was diagnosed with ADHD. He was on dexamphetamine (sp?) the paediatrician told her to take one and see how she felt. She didn’t sleep for 2 days and the house was spotless, she cleaned and cooked for almost 2 days straight. She did it when we went to our fathers house for the week during school holidays so we just came back to an insanely clean house and lots and lots of food.
