Don't go to America then you will hate it they live off their tips and you have to tip.

Yes it's rude, it's normal in other parts of the world but not here. We pay high prices already and the staff are getting paid well for the job they do. Plus the money you're tipping isn't necessarily going to the worker that gave you good service, if the workers even see it, it goes to all of them so even the worker that is rude as hell is getting a cut out of the others good work. If you really must tip don't put it in a jar, give it directly to the person who deserves it.

My coffee lady knows my name, she makes a damn good cuppa (hard to find) sees me walking down the street and usually has my coffee ready before iv paid. My coffe is $4.30 and I tip 20-70cents daily.
It’s no skin off my bag, gets rid of my loose change, and might help her more thAn me.

If I get any good service I tip. Cleaning , food or drink. If someone does their job well I thank them with money.
I actually see it the other way, I’m respecting them for the respectable way they served me.

Other cafes I’m not a local too, again meh, it’s nice to have somewhere to throw my loose change.

Honestly your question makes me a bit sad.
Where has all the kindness in the world gone. It’s only getting more and more self centred and selfish.

So our minimum wages are set to become the highest in the world and then they want a tip!? No! I think it is very rude, how much more money do they want. I never put money in tip jars here.

That's great that minimum wages are in theory the highest. But I think you would find many cafe owners won't comply with these laws and pay their staff cash, don't pay their super, pay below award wages.
And as a 15-19 year old, you don't really fight for your rights or have much knowledge of what you can do.

To the “we aren’t living in America” comment, yes I am aware of that. However the OP asked my opinion and I gave it.

That was your choice to pay that much.
I always round up and donate to charities for places that do that. That's my choice. And I'm sure someone will love the service and tip for that. Their choice.

I can't help but think that if we worked on a tipping system then maybe it would encourage people to give better service. Luckily most Australians are pretty good 👍

If I've been out on a girls night and we have extra money after everyone has put in their $20 or whatever, then the extra goes in the jar. But besides that, I don't use them.

ANSWER

Yes considering the wages here. It’s understandable overseas as the wages are nothing. I find it highly rude

1. The owner will often put money in the tip jar before opening, to encourage people to add to it.
2. If you feel the service was above and beyond what you expected, tip away. Or don't. It's not compulsory.
3. Even if you feel pressured to tip, and you don't want to, don't. What are they going to do, refund your money and send you to the competition? Haha no. If you don't want to tip, don't.
4. Sometimes the tips go straight to charity. I worked at a local cafe when I was younger, and every tip was collected and given to the childrens hospital. We only gave about $40 a month, but that was better than nothing

I paywave with my phone so it's a moot point for me. I don't carry cash.
If I start getting asked to add paywave tips to my bill then I'll be annoyed.
Tipping is beginning to creep in here though. Scares me as our prices are already very high in comparison.

I have seen it as an option on a bill for giving a tip.

I don't think it's rude, it's often in small businesses. Those jars after a year can shout a round of drinks or a plate of nibbles etc. for staff who generally do work hard so I have no objection to contributing to especially in places that aren't big corporations etc where there is usually some form of budget for stuff like that. OR, there is a large amount of people attending which reduces the cost per head. So, if my 10c adds up, why not.

Not at all. If you don't like it then don't tip it

I think it's rude. It's another Americanism creeping into our country. It won't be long before it becomes the norm., but here in Australia, the workers receive higher wages anyway, so we shouldn't be expected to add to the tipping jar. Anyway, how do we know that the money is dished out to the right people?
