is 10 too young for child to stay home alone for a few hours during the day? Work is only 5 min drive

Answered 5 years ago

can't get the day off and have to go to work. Son will probably sleep until lunchtime anyway and I will be home at 2pm
There are no PCYC options or activities like in big cities. rural town.

I am more concerned about a 10tear old sleeping until lunch time. He sounds like he needs to get off his arse and do stuff

I left 2 twelve year old boys alone for 1/2 hr and they had watched horror movies the night before. Anyway they hear a noise in the house run to the neighbors who calls the police and calls me. I arrive home to the police who have been through the house and tell my husband that we should not leave kids home alone.
All I could think was thank god the house was clean. I knew there was no danger.

Before having a 10 year old I would have said yes! Way too young.

Now I have a 10 year old and I leave him home (2/3 hours max is the longest) and rarely it’s that long.

I feed him before I leave. Then he sits and watches tv/plays video games. I’m back before he’s hungry. Or he makes himself a sandwich/snack. But when he’s playing games could probably go hours without eating

As long as there’s a phone. I think it’s ok
(However all children are different. If he feels comfortable with it. It’s good)

I don’t think it’s actually legal to leave them alone for long periods until they are 12 (depending on state). Personally at 10 as long as the child is well behaved and knows what he can/can’t do it’s fine. I’d also be calling to check on him regularly.

The only state is qld. Other states don’t have such rules and even the qld one is questionable if you read into it

No other state other than QLD has that law and even then it is a grey area open to various interpretations

I left my daughter at that age.
She was very capable and responsible, and happy and very good when she had the TV and her own things around her. And her bull terrier dog with her.
If anyone broke in, they would have been taken out in pieces, after the dog had dealt to them.
Instructions were, front door kept locked, and not answered and opened if anyone knocked, no cooking, but could boil kettle for a pot of flavoured noodles.
But I couldn't have left her brother at the same age.

She sounds like a very responsible young lady. Well done.
My son is the same, he may make himself a sandwich or cup noodles but wouldn't turn on stove or oven etc,

Shouldn’t be an issue as long as he knows don’t cook, don’t open door etc

He'd be too lazy to cook himself anything haha. It would be
1. Wake up at lunchtime
2. play playstation/watch movie
3. wait for mum to get home to feed me

I leave mine. He knows the neighbours. He has a phone. He keeps the house locked and watches tv. We text each other to make sure all is ok.
