I've never watched, or betted on it. And I won't be starting now (I'm busy and have no money to gamble anyway).
But I have no opinion either way on the morality of it.

I'll be watching on tv, I'm in a sweep (chocolate, not money). I wouldn't go to the Melbourne cup, too big and I'm not that interested. I've been to smaller meets, they are important in smaller country towns and are a real community event.

I'm not watching it mostly because I don't care. I used to question the treatment of the horses as i'm an animal lover. I haven't watched the video... I can't. It's good people are becoming more aware of things like that but I wouldn't go & protest as I think it's pointless. The amount of wealthy people involved & it's celebrated status it won't ever go away. Remember when they tried to ban racing greyhounds- that didn't last long & that's just dog racing- really unglamorous. Most people don't care about the race it's just a good excuse to relax & have a glass of champagne during the work day & who wouldn't love that?

I have an opinion on morality of it. I have been in horse racing industry for w while now. I absolutely love horses. They are bred for racing. Dogs and cats are bred to be our pets. Sheep, cows and pigs etc are bred for food. All animal “industries” have their “wastage” ( pet ownership is responsible for over a quarter of a million of healthy animals being destroyed every year...). Of course no one is ignorant enough to believe all horses will be rehomed after racing. I Accept that horses have to put down ( same as dogs and cats) . The way they get killed is not humane. I didn’t watch the show. They are highly intelligent animals and to go in such a barbaric way is shocking. In saying that I don’t agree with other livestock being destroyed in the same way. Slaughterhouses have a lot to answer to and a lot to improve.
Racing industry keeps improving as far as animal welfare goes. There is no doubt that a lot more could and should be done. No one would be more distressed about the footage than people who look after those horses everyday. The amount of love and care they get while in racing doesn’t compare to anything I have seen before. No... they are worth nothing as far as the monies go to strappers. The bond with a horse is like no other. Horses do enjoy racing. I know it might be hard to comprehend, but they really do. Not all of them, but most do. We know some of them will be destroyed, not like that though.
I don’t think racing will stop. I don’t think it should stop. It’s a massive industry with lots of jobs. The program exposed something what should have been exposed long time ago. I think anything that leads to animal welfare improvement is a win.
In saying that I will watch Melbourne cup at home. Im not a fan of drunk crowds and not a gambler either.
