No coz there’s none in stock anywhere. There is more arriving next week but doc receptionist told me it’s only for people in high risk category. Apparently my kids don’t matter.

Yes. And they had a localised site reaction-swelling and itchiness, but guess what they will get it next year too. Couple of days of discomfort beats the real flu any time.

I wish we could ask questions without heads being bitten off. I vaccinate my kids but really struggle leading up to it because at the end of the day, it’s chemicals being pumped into them and I always fear how they would react. With optional vaccines, I just balance out pros and cons to see which is more likely to happen and/if it’s worth the exatra stuff we put in their little bodies. Be mindful of how you speak ladies. Just because you vaccinate (as do I), it does not make you superior. Chances are anti vaxxers (which I am NOT) know every ingredient in vaccines much more than the majority that do vaccinate just because.

I don't think that answer was rude at all. It IS kind of obvious what a flu vaccine is for - e.g. preventing the flu.

"Chemicals being pumped into them" is an accurate description of what happens when they drink a glass of water! Everything in the world has a chemical component, everything we touch and inhale and ingest is chemicals. The specific chemicals in vaccines have been carefully tested over & over again to make sure they're safe. It's very rare (like, literally one in a million) to get a serious reaction, and even when it happens, it's treatable.

It's your decision and up to you of course. But for me, even if something lowers the chance of them getting the flu by just a little bit, it's worth doing. I would much rather my kid get a rash from the vaccine than the flu.

How can you compare chemicals in vaccines to chemicals in water? Old mate above has a point about who knows what 🤪

REPLY

I'm using it as an example, because people often use the word 'chemicals' as a scare tactic against vaccines, showing a misunderstanding of chemistry and how it works.

It's not about the chemicals themselves or how 'toxic' they are, it's about the concentration and how the body processes it. For example: pears contain formaldehyde, tuna contains mercury, human breastmilk contains aluminium. All of them in much greater amounts than found in vaccines.

Anyway the take home message is: none of the 'chemicals' in vaccines pose any threat for the vast majority of people.

Healthy people don't need to be immunised against the flu, you have all been scared into it.

Healthy people contract influenza. I have seen it with my own two eyes.

'Healthy' people don't need to be immunised... lol. You do know how germs work, right? They don't hang back saying "oh wait, hold on guys, this person's healthy so we can't infect them!"

If you dont fit into anynof these then no, you don't need it. I would like to see a system in place that puts these people first before anyone else so we avoid shortages next year.

pregnant women (at any stage of pregnancy)
children aged 6 months to less than 5 years (learn more about the flu vaccine for children)
people 65 years and older
Aboriginal people 6 months and older
People 6 months and older with medical conditions that put them at risk of severe flu, including:
heart disease
kidney disease
chronic respiratory conditions
chronic illnesses that required regular medical attention or hospitalisation in the previous year
chronic neurological conditions
impaired immunity
children aged 6 months to 10 years receiving long-term aspirin therapy.

^ I think most of those are already able to get vaccinated for free, and they do have their own stock. Our medical centre let's us know when they've got government funded stock, and then when they receive private stock.

When I said healthy people don't need to be immunised I didn't mean healthy people don't catch the flu, healthy people can fight it off reasonably well. Yes it makes you feel like shit but its the flu, you're not fucking dying from it unless you develop complications just like every other year. No different. The risk has not increased only the media hype. The government is pushing immunisations to keep people from clogging up EDs unnecessarily because they have the flu. They used to just use an ad campaign telling everyone they dont need to see a Dr for the flu only if they develop signs of something more serious but obviously that didn't work so they have gone to the other end of the scale and want to scare everyone into getting the vaccine.

We have confirmed cases at the kids school.
I think schools should run an immunisation program for all the children and staff.

Confirmed cases of the flu? Get the hazmat suits out pronto 😷. This is the kind of thing I find funny, every school every year has cases of the flu. Nothing has changed. We would normally
just say theres a bug going around school not "confirmed cases" like its the plague. I love that we have the vaccination but I cant stand this hype surrounding it this year like its going to wipe out the whole of humanity.

Ah ok so what you meant was "Healthy people don't DIE from the flu".

Sorry to burst your bubble but that just isn't correct. Some groups of people are more LIKELY to die from the flu (e.g. the elderly, babies) but that doesn't mean that perfectly healthy people CAN'T develop complications and die from the flu. They absolutely still can, and do.

I say, why not lower that risk down from "slight" to "nearly non-existent"? It's a little jab with a needle, it takes five minutes, and it costs $15. Worth it.

Swimming lessons are one of the last places you’ll pick up the flu.
You don’t get the flu from being cold.

I thought she meant from being in the pool with the germs

REPLY

Being in a warm, moist environement that germs love to grow in with lots of other people is a good reason to get a flu shot.

Chlorine kills everything

REPLY
No it doesn't. Lots of germs in pools. My dad has a suppressed immune system and his specialist told he is never to go in to a public pool

REPLY
Well thats kinda weird since the whole point of using chlorine in pools is to kill bacteria. They have even noticed health benefits in aboriginal communities that have public pools.

REPLY
Chlorine doesn't kill off everything, but it does a pretty good job. Also it can take different amounts of time to kill off different germs, so you can still catch bugs as they aren't necessarily killed off instantly.

it's the bacteria in the warm, moist environment around the pool and in the change rooms that is the worry.
