We don't spend much. We have agreements with everyone that we don't exchange gifts. I carefully select a couple of gifts my kids actually want & will use rather than amount or cost. Santa sacks are the same. Lunch is everyone contributes & basic so it only cost me about $30 in food.

We never use credit because we don't spend enough to justify rewards programs.

We're motivated though. I hate stuff & we all love to travel. We're off to Japan in a couple of months. The kids will get more from that than gifts & DH & I get more than just paying off debt.

Wait there are people going into DEBT just for christmas?? I don't get it. Could you not just... think ahead and not spend so much? The kids would enjoy a day at the beach or a bike ride to the park with the family far more than 100 plastic toys.

You’ve only got to get ahead one year - the next you can save for next Christmas instead of paying off last Christmas.

OR... Don't spend so much? I have 2 kids and a big extended family and I reckon we spent about $150 all up including food & presents. can't see why it needs to be more. Everyone contributes food, Kris kringle gifts so you don't all have to buy 20 gifts for people you hardly know & get 20 gifts you don't need.

^awesome. Christmas is not a good enough reason to go into debt

I try not to be over the top with Christmas - I spent about $1200 on everything in total, including food.
I spend throughout the year from that. I spread the food cost over a few months beforehand so that I only have to buy the fresh fruit and vegetables in the few days before Christmas.
I do have a credit card but I'm very careful with it - I only use it for online purchases and pay it straight away.

You can use a debit card for that

Don’t mean to sound rude, but that sounds a little high for someone not going over the top? I’m guessing thoughts it’s more just because you have extended family gifts? Now that I think about it, my hubby and I don’t buy eachother gifts...and limit big time just because we feel less is more..it’s interesting how everyone is so different these days! X

I'm not the above commenter. $1200 is about what I spend, it's too much but for what to covers, not that much. I'm talking 10 adults present and 9 kids presents, all cards, paper etc and nibbles to take to both sides of family

I am the above commenter - I agree it’s too much but it’s the least I can get away with and keep the peace with my in-laws - we are expected to do quite substantial gifts for the nieces and nephews. It also includes Santa and food.

Cc are only trouble if you can't manage them. We pay for EVERYTHING on cc and have a direct debit set up with the bank to pay it off every month before any interest gets charged. Iwe only jave one cc between us. n 20+ years we have NEVER had cc issues

I wrote this response, and there are 2 reason why we do this. 1 - my hubby flys a lot for wok so racks up a lot of ff points - using cc adds to our points balance. 2 - we keep as much money as we can in our bank ac to offset the interest on our mortgage

I didn’t use my cc at all. I spread expense throughout the year and buy presents Xmas and birthday well before the events. I also save for other Xmas costs like food etc.
