Contraception for after baby is born

Answered 4 years ago

I had implanon before, but it took five years to start ovulating again after taking it out, and as I'm 32 I don't know if that's a wise idea at my age if we decide to have a second baby.
What other options are good? My doctor has not been helpful, says lots of choose from, but doesn't go into them grr

Have you had baby yet or just doing your research before baby’s born? After I had each of mine, my midwife discussed contraception while I was still in hospital and gave me handouts on the different types. But as it took a few years to get pregnant with my first we chose not to use any contraception between kids. I’ve just had baby number 3 and am about to start on the mini pill. If you’re not breastfeeding I think the normal pill is more effective. I would find a new gp though if you’re not getting the support and information you need.

2 weeks till I'm due, so probably should have something in mind before baby here

Definitely have a chat your midwife then. But I would suggest either condoms or pill. Mini pill, which is progesterone only, is recommended if breastfeeding as oestrogen in regular pill can interfere with milk production.

Should add that it’s more important to take the mini pill at the same time each day because it’s a lower dose of hormone than the regular pill. So if you’re not one to be vigilant in taking a pill at exactly the same time every day then a barrier method like condoms might suit you better. You can combine condoms with billing’s method (google it) so you don’t have to use a condom every time, only when you know you’re in the fertile part of your menstrual cycle. Billing’s method can also help you predict when your period is about to return if your breastfeeding.

Contact your local family planning clinic. They Also have a number of fact sheets for different types of contraception on their website http://familyplanningallianceaustralia.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/Contraceptive-Choices-factsheet.pdf

I did condoms then mini-pill for my first. My second is due in a few weeks and we are thinking of more permanent options now, but until we decide we will probably do the same. In between kids I had the Mirena, which worked, but I didn't like having it there at all.

Get a new doctor, a second opinion, or visit a gyno.

Mini pill. I got pregnant the first cycle off it, for number 2.
Good luck!
