Bed time for pre-teen?

Answered 4 years ago

I have a 12yr old son. I work full time and dad isn’t in the picture so it’s just me and my son. He keeps wanting to stay up later. Normal bedtime is 8:30 but he’s pushing for 9-9:30 now that he’s a bit older. School nights only. On weekend he usually has a friend over or is at a friends house so it’s basically free range on weekends which I’m cool with as we live in a small town so kids usually don’t come home until 6 anyway as a general rule within our community. What time does everyone else send their kids to bed on a school night?

830 during school week
10 weekend
Until 14

Then 9 during the week
11 on weekends
Until 16

My 16 and 17 year old can stay up till when ever weekends but have a bedtime if 10 during the week that is flexible dependant on out of school study and homework being done, school and if they are trying to pull sick days, their grades, their attitude and how their extracurricular sports and part time work are being managed. I firmly believe that I am teaching them good decision making and not lording over them ... they will be adults sooner rather than later and need to understand consequences come from poor decision making.
