I don’t see an issue with a small group of friends, especially if they’re friends from school who have regular contact with your child anyway.

Depends, where do you live? In WA we are allowed 20 people

In Queensland we can have public gatherings of up to 10 people, so this weekend for my daughter's 3rd birthday we are choosing to do a picnic morning tea in the park (tons of open space, bigger than a soccer field) with our family (total of 4 people) and one friend and their family (total of 4 people). We won't be right on top of each other as the recommendation is still to keep 1.5 m between you and others you don't live with. It will be an hour long, the kids will be running around and playing. Playgrounds are open here and school has gone back so I'm feeling ok with this decision.

For my oldest daughter's 5th birthday at the start of May we did a physical distancing picnic - our family on one picnic mat, my parents on their own picnic mat 2 m away. They gently tossed presents to the birthday girl (on the grass), we chatted, the kids ran around on the grass, it was nice and still pretty safe I reckon. We also had friends drop by our fence to say happy birthday to her (only a handful, spread out over the day), which was lovely.

My DS is a May baby. We have decided to delay his party until spring. I think lots of people will be hosting delayed parties. Maybe you could do that?
