Bachelor degree afte 40?

Answered 4 years ago

Have you or do you know anyone who has started bachelor degree after 40? I am thinking about complete career change which would require 3-4 years of studying. I could stop working for the time and focus on study and kids. Is there a point? It is something I am passionate about and would love to do, is it too late?
Any advice would be appropriated.

Sure, why not? I know of someone who quit his job in his late 50's and went to law school. He's now a lawyer.

I wouldn't bother honestly. The stress, time, money. Its a lot of money to pay when you may not even earn back the fees.
Being honest, not negative. I have done this but wouldnt do it again. I have a very expensive piece of paper. That's it.

Is it possible you chose the wrong degree and had too much passion, without the long term plan? I feel like uni’s are desperate to hook everyone in, but going into a degree means you actually know the pathway you want to go and just can’t get there otherwise when you’re older. In most cases, finding yourself through a degree is a an illusion but a very profitable one

curious what degree you have. I have a science degree and I understand your frustration. there arent many job options any more ( I started in the early 90s then the state bank collapsed and lots of industry shut down). But I have done futher study in IT and having the science degree does probably improve my chances against another candidate if they dont have it.

If you are passionate about it go for it! You got roughly 20 years of work left! Imagine doing another 20 years of something you aren’t passionate about.

Yes there is a point because you have the rest of your life to enjoy a fulfilling career. You are one of the lucky people who knows what they want to do cause there’s many stuck in a job with no passion or direction. Just try it you’ll be glad you did. And if you don’t like the degree you can always get out after one semester. Good luck

This is entirely up to you. I used to work at a Uni & people of all ages study. Age isn't a barrier unless you decide it is one. You can study part time & work.

However, depending on your field, once you've started studying you can look for entry level jobs in your industry (even reception). It gives you an advantage once graduated & makes sure you know what your job entails. I know so many people who have left careers because it wasn't what they envisioned.

Look at the outcomes. Loss of income, debt, potential income from your new job.
Are there other avenues you can use? Diplomas, etc.? These can be used as rpl in some degrees.

There are many options. Just do your research.

Of course it's not too late! Just be prepared for the reality of a lot of hard work made harder because you also have a family. It takes planning, motivation and good time organisation.

Sure but be prepared to start at the bottom to get experience in your new field and there is a lot of age discrimination for new opportunities.

Well people our age will be working until 70 so yes theres a point. But you would want to pick something you are really sure you are going to get a job with if you plan to quit your current job. Be careful with general degrees like arts or commerce. Im not saying that to put those degrees down but the fact is there arent heaps of jobs and you will be competing against people with experience although if you coud channel your previous experience thats a huge plus.
