What about everyone else who isn't on Centrelink? It's pretty crappy...we can't get Centrelink payments so will get nothing. But we aren't rolling in $ either and could really, really use a helping hand.. but no they don't care about the rest of us

I think it's just that people on benefits need a little more help. I'm on Newstart. I don't drink, smoke or take drugs. My dog (who I got when I was working) was diagnosed with heart problems & her medication costs over $70 a fortnight. I rent a granny flat from my mum & stepdad for $100 a week [cheap as] & am struggling to even feed myself let alone buy other necessities like clothes, homewares etc or save anything. I am not able to work as I have severe anxiety & last year I spent 2 months desperately ill not even able to make my own dinner & visiting emergency every few days. I was crippled for six months. This $750 will allow me to catch up on some bills, get my car back on the road and maybe stock up on food etc a bit & maybe save. This week, the only available toilet paper at my shops was $12. I can't afford that, so I've had to borrow some from my mum & step dad. My grocery budget is tight & doesn't permit extra spending like that. This payment is going to help me immensely.

To the anxious person who replied - the gov doesn't want people spending the money on bills or saving it, they want people spending it on 'stuff' to boost the economy.....

I acknowledge your struggles, don't get me wrong there. I know it's hard for people on those payments. But we struggle week to week also. It's just a bit frustrating that those are all they thought need a hand. Nearly the entire country is struggling not just welfare recipients

REPLY

Yep, sucks doesn't it. It's going to a lot of people who don't deserve it and don't do the right thing, and those of us that work and live a busy life to take care of ourselves get nothing. Makes me wonder why we bother, we could just sit back and get free handouts

Okay so I write this original reply. I understand they need it. But so do other people. My husband's work has been told they may be forced to have a month off worst case. We have 2 weeks sick pay..then have to go to extreme of his boss temporarily firing him so we can pull redundancy if it comes to it and hope he's honest and hires him back. Then left with no redundancy fund if anything ever happens to his job as it's a rough world in construction can have no job at the drop of a hat. It's effecting everyone not just bloody welfare recipients.

Maybe if people didn't vote for right wing capitalists, and instead voted towards a more socialist party who supported unions, we would all be getting $750 or at least having unions support us by getting extra paid sick leave whether you're casual or permanent to cover time off needed for this coronavirus pandemic.
We need to vote people who will be there for the people of Australia all the time! Not just to suit one little aspect of your life at the time. Gosh everyone is so selfish!

Be careful, my friend lost her job before this and had an agreement to be rehired after signing papers to leave, it fell through and when she phoned unions they said “do you know how many calls we get each week about these gentleman agreements’ never sign anything. :(

I acknowledge money is tough for everyone. But there's a difference between earning $20,000 and $110,000.

REPLY
Are you saying that is the difference between someone getting it? Because that is not correct. I get what you are doing but it is also a gross exaggeration to think that statement should be taken as gospel. 20 vs 110k

REPLY
Someone on newstart would earn less than $20k a year.
the cut off for family tax benefit with one child is like $100k.
(I'm assuming people using stay at home mum have at least one child).
Yes there are would be single and childless people who are earning $50k who won't get it, that is true. But it sounds like the people complaining they won't get it are people with children who earn above the ftb cut off. That's a considerable amount so comparing someone on 20k newstart and working 100k family, in this case, seems fair

I find it wrong that people like my husband work their a** off, mine 10-13hrs a day, and we are the ones whose tax money gets used to pay more money to those who, let's face it, sit around not working. Just because people have a job doesn't mean they're rich Kings. The whole country is struggling right now and has been for a long time. How about everyone gets a break and we don't pay taxes on wages for a month, for everyone. So everyone can try to get a leg up

Maybe we get it because we are expendable we are low income earners so it doesn't matter if we get very ill or die. Just another way to look at it. Another way is that we are considered not working (even if we are or do) so therefore we have time to shop shop shop.

I'm pissed because my friend & her DH own a business, so does my sibling. Not only do they pay almost no tax because they claim everything down to coffee & groceries as a 'business expense', they'll now get up to 25k extra, and because they legally hide their income, they'll also get the $750 to add to their already heaving coffers.

I really wonder why we bother sometimes. Employees get screwed.

REPLY

To the person with the business owner friend. I have friends like this too. Worst thing is, they constantly brag about it! I don't know how they get away with claiming what they do as "business expenses". Really think the gov should take a closer look at how some of these small businesses are operating and audit them more regularly and closely.

REPLY
Start a business??? Why whinge about others getting ahead. A good account helps work these things out , they would be silly not to claim everything

REPLY
Wow. Ok. I didn't say they shouldn't claim everything possible, but claiming coffee with mates, nights on the booze or Uber Eats as 'business meetings', home renovations, groceries, etc. as business expenses on tax, then claiming to be minimum wage earners while legally being allowed to hide profits & get welfare & business cash grants that they spend on overseas holidays is dodgy and unfair to everyone else.

No, they don't work harder than us. My friend doesn't lift a finger. Even has fully subsidised daycare at top rate. She doesn't work at all but is getting a 'minimum wage' through the business.

Think what you like, but when you slog your guts out to be taxed mercilessly while watching someone pay almost no tax, sit on their arse all day playing video games & ordering government subsidised take out while kids are in government funded school/daycare or vacation care & get welfare to boot f*cking sucks.

I'm sorry but if your friends are doing this why don't you report them? I mean seriously..phone up stop, give them the details and let them decide if it is worth pursuing

REPLY
Because their bookkeeper knows how to set things up so it is technically legal & can't be proven. That's why I don't report it. DH works in finance & sees it all the time, so it's our system that needs changing to deter people from doing it. More audits, harsher penalties, more explanations on what things unrelated to the business are for.

REPLY

To the mum who said they burst their son's bubble..... I really feel like you are trying to instil a prejudice in your child to be hateful towards others.
If you are not eligible for the $750, I'm going to assume your household income is more than $100,000 and you cannot be doing so badly. If you are, maybe looking at your expenditure and debt is a good way to go. I think paying tax is fantastic to pay for our social government services, and supporting those who don't have the spending power of lucky people like ourselves is not only helping them when shit hits the fan but Is helping the economy. We are all days angry over the wrong things

REPLY
Yes, definitely instilling hatefulness! Maybe explain to your son that your household earns enough to not need it and life is not about comparing yourself with others constantly

REPLY
I agree that its good money goes to those who need it, but you can be just over the cutoff for ftb and be worse off than somebody who is under and gets it. A good example is a couple who each earn about 50k and have 2 kids but have to pay a lot of childcare are worse off than a family with 1 sahp and 1 worker on 95K.

Consider yourselves lucky you aren't wearing see through underwear that's so old and sewing your bra back up and gluing shoes together coz u can't afford the luxury of buying clothes as needed or food whenever u want or coffees out etc. If you aren't living like this u have no idea!!!!

I'll be hiding it from my husband (he's been accused of being abusive many a time, and I'm not sure how much more I want to overlook and excuse of his behaviour). And it will be put into a separate account he doesn't know about. In case we need to leave, I'll have something to do so with. Or maybe I'll use it to buy groceries when he expects me to pull money out of my arse. Or when he sticks his head in the sand and spends carelessly, while I have to scramble to pay the bills. Or maybe I'll use it to buy myself some job interview attire and be prepared next time I have a shot at financial freedom. Either way, he'll not be finding out about it.

From Services Australia, so people know it's not just those 'sitting around not working'. I do however think it should have gone to more people than just those on Centrelink payments:
We’re paying an Economic Support Payment of $750 to 6.5 million Australians as part of the Government’s response to coronavirus (COVID-19).

If you’re eligible, you don’t need to do anything. There’s no need to call us. We’ll pay you automatically if you’re living in Australia on 12 March 2020 and getting a pension, allowance or Family Tax Benefit or have a seniors or pensioner concession card from us or the Australian Government Department of Veterans' Affairs. It will arrive from 31 March with most receiving it by 17 April 2020.

The payment is still subject to legislation passing.

Find out if you’ll get the payment here: www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/covid-19
