Why are some family members cruel nasty and arseholes to other family members ?

My BIL is an arsehole to my husband for no genuine reason
BIL can be nice only when it suits him and thinks people should care about his busy life
He only sees family as family when it suits him
My husband doesn’t want his brother to come to his funeral when the time comes

Something is obviously wrong upstairs with the BIL(fr). Mental health issues are displayed in all forms and a lot them can't be fixed unfortunately.
The beauty of it being your BIL is that yous have a choice to interact or not.
Some family members are under the assumption that you are obligated to deal with their antisocial/unpleasant behaviours because they are family but in reality you most definitely are not.
Keep your sanity & humanity as it seems your BIL has lost both

Unfortunately anyone can be an a hole to anyone. Talk to him about it once then try to move on

He has told me in the past he hasn’t got time for this and he didn’t care about my feelings and told me to seek help

That sucks. Try to ignore it. You don’t live with him so keep interactions cordial when you’re around each other then forget about it later

You can't change him so the only thing you can do is to change the way you react. My BIL is an asshole too and all I do is say hi and bye. It works for me but won't work for everyone 😊
