Bad food habits

Answered 5 years ago

I used to be obese, I did the weight loss thing and no longer have insulin resistance.

When I was larger I had an incredible appetite, I felt like I needed thousands and thousands of calories to sustain my energy.

Some of my bad habits were

1. Eat toast when I got home from work then make dinner

2. Get drive thru for lunch and again on the way home (pre dinner)

3. Eat a whole 200g block of chocolate in one sitting a few times a week

I’m just interested in other people’s bad habits surrounding food

I literally just eat whatever I want (usually copious amounts of chocolate) and rarely feel bad about it. I'm overweight, but I justify my terrible eating because I walk 6kms a day or more. But I'm gaining weight, and I know I need to get this in hand before it gets out of control.

Well done you for losing weight like that. It takes hard work and dedication. I lost about 15kgs a few years ago, but have since gained it back. Good job to you!

Not being rude, but did you realise if you do the same thing every day I think your body gets used to it. So even though you walk heaps! Your body is probably just used to it. My hubby walks heaps but seems to make no difference to him either

Yeah I know. Which is why I'm changing up my fitness routine very soon (as soon as I get the cast off my arm I'll be starting bike riding instead of walking). I'm hoping that by changing the muscles being used, my body starts to lose weight again. I am also reeling in my food intake too.
But yeah, my husband has said the same thing, about the body getting used to repetitive exercise. It sucks.

I have a bit of the opposite eating problem. I feel bad when i eat 2 little squares of chocolate. I hate myself thinking how dare I eat that much sugar. I have 2 squares a day coz I love chocolate but then my brain hates me. I rarely have a coke can, maybe one every second/3rd week (And only with whiskey in it 😂) coz the guilt I feel for days afterwards, it's horrible. I have a very physical job and if it's my day off I feel like I don't deserve lunch. Why does my brain do this?

Not the op, but I was just like you.. any chance to eat cake or sweets or anything containing sugar, creamy pastas and heaps of it..
my biggest problem was the addiction got hold of me. I was like a crack addict searching the house for the next fix. Id eat a snack chocolate bar and 4 mins later be reaching for another. Would continue In all day in varying forms of sugar snacks of chocolate or ice cream or biscuits or anything. I ended up putting on heaps of weight until I decided NO MORE. cold turkey I cut the whole lot out including carbs. I bought a weight loss/eating plan thing online and made everything from scratch. High fats (dairy, arvo etc) were still ok so I could still have coffee and some cheese to flavour salads etc and just making meals from scratch to ensure no sugar crept in anywhere. What a change when you elimate all types of sugar and eat well balanced meals! You don’t crave it anymore and you are conscious of ruining the whole process. If I can do it; anyone can!!

Mine were stuff like getting a sausage roll from the bakery every day for lunch, eating a sugary cereal for breakfast (coco pops or something), putting so much sugar on everything, loading up my plate with heaps of pasta and very little veg and meat and eating a packet of chips every night before bed. I've switched to a chicken salad for lunch, porridge or fruit for breakfast, I don't put as much sugar on stuff, I load up my plate with veg and eat about 1/4 as much pasta of a night and have stopped buying chips. My next biggest thing to tackle is the amount of soft drink I drink and trying to switch to water. That one is proving difficult because water taste gross lol. But I am officially at a point where I drink more water than soft drink, so progress 😊. I haven't lost much weight according to the scales, but I've dropped 2 clothing sizes so can't argue with that.

Try a piece of lemon or lime in your water to switch it up or even the flavoured tea bags every now and then.

What about that cold infused tea? I’m trying that as I agree water is gross!

I don't get the water is gross thing... I love it, my husband is the same says water is boring. I hardly ever had soft drink or juice when I was a kid so I guess ultimately it was what you were used to.

I don't like some tap water :/ grew up on tank water and don't like the chemically taste. I use a filter jug now. Drinking multiple bottles of water a day ( don't drink tea or coffee) , I like to have something different every now and then and put one if those cold infused teabags in my water bottle for a couple of refills in the arvo.

Congratulations. That's great.
Changes you could make:
the type of bread your consuming & how much- just have one slice not two.
You need to pack a lunch & snacks- stop spending your hard earned money on adding kilos to the scales & making your battle harder.
Chocolate switch to dark chocolate- darker chocolate has a stronger flavour so you don't eat as much. Also dates are a good alternative to chocolate if you want to fight those chocolate cravings but i've found the chocolate cravings usually will in the end. My favourite is old gold Good luck.

Depends on the day lol but if i do something that's not considered "good eating" (hedgehog slice from the bakery) then I just try & even it out by having a tuna salad for lunch. It's all about balance. Try to tip the scale back again. I'd recommend learning about calorie counting because once you know how many calories some of those "bad choices" are adding you try & avoid them or find healthier alternatives.
