Mentality of western society these days

Answered 4 years ago

Is it me, or does society as a whole seem to be selfish, irresponsible and unaccountable for their actions, happy to blame everyone else and expect others to do things for them rather than contributing. Like the attitude is everyone owes us, rather than we should work together as a community?
Even the troll who only writes things to purposely get a rise. The attitude of everyone owes me and why should I do things for others, is a very real trend among society these days.
Where did we go wrong? How can we encourage a positive sense of community and help our fellow community members without expecting anything in return?

Western society used to be much more supportive, and much less aggressive. I am a lot older than most of you, and I don't remember anywhere near the vicious bullying at school, as goes on now. Not even in the playground and outside the school environment, And of course there was no internet, which has given bullying a major ramp up.

As Mums we used to support each other, no vicious judgement as seems to be so common now. So many Mums feel very lonely, judging by the comments on here and other forums. We used to club together to run school fundraising events, babysit each others kids around the neighbourhood. Visit anyone new in the neighbourhood and welcome them, get our kids to invite new classmates home, and contact the parents of those new kids for playdates and coffee visits after school.

It is definitely a result of uncontrolled capitalism. The government neo liberal agenda of only looking after rich mates, treating anyone who has fallen on hard times as undeserving "bludgers" who dont deserve a "fair go", and the dismantling of social safety nets by de- funding services like education, hospitals, centrelink etc, and then using the chaotic results to justify why it should all be outsourced to overseas companies is an example.

The eroding of employment security and fairness creates so much uncertainty in society that everyone is on edge, stressed, on a short fuse and likely to explode. So permanently angry.

I think capitalism, with sufficient taxation to provide required services to get people back on their feet if they fall on hard times is better than pure socialism, (communism, which is just as totalitarian as Nazi Germany was), which just creates a different set of problems.

But the countries that have good supportive societies actively teach fairness and consideration for others in school, and also teach the history of what went wrong in their countrys past, and teach how to avoid it happening again in the future. (Germany being an example),

The schools dont even seem to recognise or deal with bullying, despite all their "policies"let alone actively correct it. They just turn a blind eye.

I think some visible accountability for causing damage, or abdicating responsibility for turning a blind eye to it, might bring on some change. We might see that happen with the top managers in the banks. And that might spread, and start to turn the tide.

I think it's linked to capatilism. Capatilism is all about profit, not progress as it used to plan to be... everyone is about profiting at a consequence to everything else. Then you have people who go the straight route not making any progress because greed is more successful. Marketing then says but this, buy that, models go nuts advertising, kids are targeted and society is about trying to be something that is not only unhealthy but unachievable... "Because you're worth it"... Like more than the next person right??? Even though we are blobs doing nothing except whinging and walking around with credit cards.

I agree, but i think the ‘ship has sailed’.... All you can do is survive till ya die and avoid community at all costs. People are bad and getting worse, we are at the beginning of the end of the world.
