Declining to have your call recordered

Answered 4 years ago

Does any one do this? I have just read an article about Centrelink being able to provide the last calls of someone about Robodebt before the committed suicide. The whole “ this call my be recorded for blah”, on so many forums- banks, or anything suddenly sits unwell. I never really cared, but now thinking that they could be using it for even just training “this is bob calling from blah, listen to how he says this- this is what the call person could say back”, disturbs me. I also don’t want to say don’t give permission because I look guilty for something.. this is strange that we have normalised/are normalising this giving of our personally conversations no? I think I have to say no from now on!

For training purposes any identifying personal info would be removed i think, otherwise i think it’s good insurance for you to have the call recorded, it covers you if things go wrong. The woman who requested the recordings of her son will probably use them in court to sue the shit out of the government now Robodebts have been deemed unlawful.

A recorded call saved me with my insurance company once. I called to make changes to my policy - Changing address, moving in with partner and mentioned that he may drive my car sometimes, so I asked if they could make all the necessary changes to accomodate.

They didn't explicitly action adding him as a nominated driver, just as someone I lived with, and just the change of address. My partner was driving, crashed my car and insurance tried to weasel out of it, until they found the recording of my call, wanting to change my policy. They paid up. They also back-charged me from the date of the call, as my fortnightly payment went up by a couple of dollars to add him.

I don't mind them being recorded as that way if they tell you one thing and do another there is a record of it.
