RN vs EN

Answered 4 years ago

Can anyone break it down for me? I'm tossing up. I'm not looking to work in a hospital (I don't want shift work) more so doctors office, specialist rooms etc I can't figure out what is better? Google is very selective with all the details.

To work as an EN or RN in a doctor’s office, you will need at least 1-2 years of hospital experience either in an acute surgical/medical ward or emergency. There’s also a graduate certificate of general nursing you can do after finishing your RN qualification at uni. That plus hospital experience will make getting a doctor surgery job easier.

I was a carer in aged care and thought I wanted to be a nurse in aged care.
But I did my EN and they are paid $15-20 less and have almost as much responsibility as an RN.
In the end it was too much responsibility and too much paperwork and less 1:1 with the oldies particularly when you consideredthe fact it was $1.50 an hour more than being a carer.
Just not for me.
RN is a lot of commitment to study but probably worth it in the end for pay, scope of practice and job availability. I have seen a change where some specialities/fields no longer employ new ENs, but take on RNs as they can handle more responsibility.

RN gives you more scope for promotion and autonomy. Also the pay is a lot better It’s worthwhile getting that degree, especially for the area you wish to work in.

Also, get the ward experience , do the shift work and get those skills. It will make you a better nurse and look better on your CV when you apply for jobs in doctors rooms. As ENs need to work under the supervision of an RN and there is usually only One nurse working in one doctors room at a time, having your RN is essential.
