Do you use gumtree?

Answered 5 years ago

Everytime I post stuff I get an email asking if the item is available and when can they pick up. I respond and then I never hear back again. It happens all the time. Do people intentionally do this to mess with sellers? Does this happen to you too? I know they’re getting my response because I tested it by answering my own email.

The ones I hate are the ones who go yep I'll come pick it up, yep I'll be there at this time, then I spend half a day waiting for someone who doesn't show.

Tell them to send a message when they leave?

When using the app there are pre written messages and as you scroll you can accidently hit the message so it sends a message to the seller. It would happen to me each time I sold stuff and I'd get frustrated at these people but then it accidently happened to me and I realised it was most likely an accident

I did think of that but No it’s not the case with me. I get message saying hey, is your stuff still available . Can I come on the weekend to get it. It’s not one of the standard responses you can choose.

I sell stuff on gumtree all the time and yes this happens all the time. I arrange times for someone to come and look and they never turn up. But I have always ended up selling what I had up for sale and I have bought a lot from gumtree. I've also had scammers. You just have to hope they show up and watch out for scammers. I had someone who wanted a my sons phone posted, they even sent an email from paypal saying the money has been put in. But my gut instinct was shouting scam. So I rang paypal and sure enough there was no money there. The email was so real. This will always happen, but it happens on other sites as well. Pick a day for someone to come and buy your things on a day that you know you will be home, that way you aren't inconvenienced. It's a great place to buy and sell. But if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. I have meet people in public, which is safe. And now I always ask for cash, and never give out my bank details.

I use it to clear out free stuff or $5/$10 items. I arrange to leave them at the front door on “x” day after “y” time and they can leave cash in the envelope in the letter box. Then I don’t have to be home and if they choose not to take it they just don’t pay. No haggling. Always worked well for me like this.

Unfortunately if I left stuff at the front of my house, someone would steal it before the buyer turned up!

Some people are just rude. I always respond, even if it's to say I've changed my mind and I'm not interested any more.

My experience on Gumtree has been mixed. I have received some responses that seemed like spam and a few genuine ones too. Give it time and see how it goes I guess.
