Stop washing your clothes? Food for thought

Answered 5 years ago

Just read an article on BBC from high end designers including Stella McCartney saying that we are way over washing clothes. Food for thought everyone. I know I am a bit trigger happy with washing, even though my kids clothes need replacing because of it. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-48908413 Is the article.

I have a fair few dryclean only items, like coats and skirts for work so I'm very careful with airing them in the sun between wear as that's just way to expensive. I'll only wear shirts or work tops once but my lounge around home clothes get washed once they are dirty, which is maybe after 3 or 4 days. My daughter tends to get her uniforms filthy but her jumper survives 2 or 3 wears. Once she's in the formal uniform in grade 1 it will end up being the same dryclean routine as my work clothes with a new shirt each day.

Underwear/socks/stockings are obviously a 12 hour only wear item.

I don't believe in washing things more than absolutely necessary, i work full time, I'm a clean and hygenic person, i don't have time for that!

I read it was really bad for denim so i try & hold back a bit but 2 or 3 wears & those old demons come back hmm better give it a wash. I can't help myself. I try & hold back with big jumpers too. I am aware of the amount of washing we do thats probably unnecessary eg my sons socks (he's 4), i put them on, 10 minutes later he's taken them off in some some obscure place & they usually just get chucked in the wash again at the end of the day. Little things like that add up.

2-3 wears is very reasonable when it comes to denim and not over washing. It’s a fallacy that denim doesnt need washing despite the fact it collects bacteria just as much as other items of your clothes.

Ah but do you think we overdo it with the bacteria hating? Antibacterial soap, wipes, sprays etc. Isn't that part of the reason we're becoming more susceptible to things because aren't exposing ourselves to enough bacteria- more food for thought.

I tend to have a pair of jeans and a pair of track pants for the week. Trackies on when at home, change to jeans when going down the street. Probably 2 tops and 1 jumper for the week, although if anything gets smelly or too dirty I'll change it. My husband wears his (office) work clothes for 2 days and always changes into his casual clothes at home which last the week. The kids clothes tend to last a couple of days before being changing.

I'm curious about the not washing jeans thing whether it's different depending on whether it's old school stiff denim or if it's super stretchy denim you can get nowadays.

I agree but you're never going to get through to some people.

The women on here I've noticed in particular are FANATICAL about washing and start getting nasty and calling people 'dirty sl*ts' if they don't wash every last item of clothing & linen in their house 2x a day.
