Is anyone else getting crazy high utility bills during lockdown?

Answered 2 years ago

My latest gas bill was $400 a month! It doesn’t seem fair that utility bills are soy rocketing during lockdown, we have no choice but to be home! Pi$$ed off!

Mine havnt really changed much, when all this started i made sure i was putting $25 pw on all of them, so mine have been pretty much paid or in credit when they arrive. My bills seem to be lower then most other peoples though, not sure why that is because i dont scrimp on anything (ha!) use heaters and air con when ever i want.

Also, im in WA and our Government put a $300 credit on my electricity bill, so that has helped

We got that too. I helped so much. We automatically pay $50pw on our power and then with the $300 credit, we're actually up to date

Im in WA and I don't think we got this. Do you have to have a low income or something?

Bummer. Its okay, its great people can get help if they need and its okay if we don't qualify, it means we are very lucky that we can pay our bills 🌈

The $300 credit was for healthcare card/pension card holders i believe. It was automatically paid to synergy, if you qualify you dont have to do anything, it will just appear.

You have a choice on much resources you use. Don't turn the ducted heating on or turn it down lower. Make sure you house is energy efficient. look around for another provider. lots you can do to save on bills. it's all choice.

You might be home more but are probably saving money in other areas too.

Yes it's a choice be cold & miserable & not such a high bill or be comfortable and poor - choice is yours

Not everyone has ducted heating. Some of us dont have much choice in that area.

Not my comment, but yes it is a choice. If her gas bill has gone up heaps I'd assume it's for heating, which means she chose to use the heater. We have ducted gas and know that our winter bill is about $1200 and we are happy to pay that knowing our house is 20 degrees all day. If we didn't want such a big bill we'd turn it down and put more clothes on, or possibly use the reverse cycle if electricity is cheaper.

Not everyone has that choice some people rent & are lumped with whatever facilities are available.

^^ you still have a choice how to use those facilities.

I would respectfully disagree. Choice is not usually an option for lower incomes.. I worked with someone who specifically educated Lower incomes on this as soaring energy bills are such an issue and she runs a charity for it.. unfortunately another factor is there is no regulation (yet), that rental properties have a healthy energy usage design. So one can be living in a rental with such bad insulation that their heating bills are astronomical, but that’s all they can afford because they have such excessive bills..and unfortunately it makes little difference as they are still cold. I’m glad you can afford 20c in winter, but when you live in an old house that is designed for summer, or has really bad drafts this is not possible. This will hopefully change soon however.

Exactly thank you. Is no one going to tell her she needs a hug? You need a hug for being so ignorant. We're better off than the average renter as we're about to get out but alot of people aren't that lucky and that's how live everyday. Drafty houses with no insulation, old air conditioners if you're lucky, usually mould issues, is the norm.

You cant blame having to stay home and having no choice about it, we are living in a state of emergency, during a pandemic, this is life, shit happens and we have to deal with it.

Yes heaps more. Extra washing because it's not uniforms it's clothes they get dirty and change, extra heater usage, tv use, and the kids don't know that it's daylight and you don't need every damn light on
