What do you do with your kids after school?

Answered 4 years ago

My children ( year 1and 3) complain that they don’t do anything after school. They do they sports and other paid activities 3 times a week each. We don’t really meet with anyone during the week or do anything other than play at home, homework, dinner, reading etc. occasional bike ride. Recently both started complaining how boring they life is and that they never do anything fun after school. Made me wonder if I am poorly organised and we should try fit more things after school. We have dinner 5.30ish and they are in bed by 7.30.

Put them in after school care lol Honestly though, I think 3 days a week of afterschool activities is enough. Tell them to go outside and play, they sound ungrateful. Learn to entertain yourselves kids!

I have four kids between the ages of 9 and 16. They get something to eat. They get what we call “nothing time” which is time they can do whatever they want free of me asking them about homework until 5pm. Then it’s homework or sports. We literally have one sport training or another every night bar Monday and all day on Saturday and Sunday. My eldest does competitive swimming and the 11 year old is in a rep side for his sport sooooo as you can imagine we don’t get much to just chill.
As for kids being “bored”... your not their entertainer. I have never ever tolerated the whole I am bored speech from any of my kids... I literally just turn and walk away. I am their mother not a dancing monkey

Tell them to get outside and play!! My kids are in highschool and most afternoons (depending on homework/ assignments) they still head outside to play basketball, handball, soccer, netball, kick the footy etc in the backyard. We also regularly go for an afternoon stroll or scooter!

Forget putting homework 1st!!!

To all the commenters- play and being a kid - enjoying childhood is most important!!!

School is overloaded!

Don't force your kids into overtime!!!

Let them be kids!!

Give them a big back yard to run free!!

Fkkkk your theatre room- a yard is more important!!!

My kids are preschool, kindy and year 3. They come home, the older 2 get changed and do their homework for about 20 minutes then all 3 go outside and do whatever they want. We have a park next door or a trampoline and swing set in the backyard. They are not in any after school activities and never whinge until it hits 5.30 and I call them inside for dinner lol.

Mine are kindy & year 2. Twice a week DS has therapy (ASD, very high functioning). Saturday is swimming. Other than that we go home, do homework & they play.

I've tried to get DS into another activity but he gets anxious about it. They seem to enjoy the time to unwind. We do try to go to parks etc. on weekends.

Kids need to be bored occasionally (there's research that backs this up). It teaches them to be creative and develops initiative. So don't run yourself ragged entertaining them. You're doing enough!!
