I do it so I can run the air con and cook down the car for the kids. Never did it before I had kids. My brother and sister so this too. My mum and dad never did!

It comes from the olden days when everyone warmed up their engine before driving off. This was less stressful on the metal parts moving inside the motor, and didn't cause as much wear and tear. Todays younger motorists don't have much mechanical knowledge, so I would say that anybody who does this, probably picked up the habit from their parents.
