Anzac Day

Answered 2 years ago

the soldiers fought to make Australia safe.
If they did not fight Australia would have been taken over.
I am not sure if that’s how to explain it in simple terms to my kids.

We’ve never reallly fought to make Australia safe, only once with the Japanese and we never commemorate that.

We’ve fought other people’s conflicts.

Surely you have some idea of ethics, morals and doing the right thing?
Aussies help others. Fact.
I'm not angry, just disgusted that some ignorant people just don't get it.

"Many years ago, some bad guys wanted to take over Australia and make it their new home. To stop them, some very brave men (called soldiers) came together and went off to fight them. And some brave women went over to help in any way they could. The good guys, us, eventually won. But not before some of them died. Today, we remember the heroes who fought for our freedom and home. We think about how scary it would have been to go away and fight, and how much they would have missed their families. We think about all the things we get to have and do because of them. We can go out for walks, we can swim in the ocean, eat ice cream, listen to music that we like, all because our good guys defeated the bad guys. We honour them and their sacrifices. That's why we listen to the services we do, and when we say Lest We Forget, that's how we say thank you and I appreciate all you did".

I made my kids watch a short documentary on youtube about it. I'm sure you can find one too that would help them understand.
