How much to pay neighbourhood kids to feed dog while on holiday?

Answered 5 years ago

What is the going rate for a 12/13 year old to feed the dog and give her a pat per day? I was thinking $5 or $10?
$10 is okay for short trips away, but when looking at 2-3 weeks this quickly adds up to a LOT for a young teen. What do you think?

My son does this for $10 per day for people in our neighborhood. He is actually doing it for the people 2 doors up for 2 weeks, $150 for the 2 weeks

I should have added, it's an outside dog - just need to come through the side fence and feed once per day :)

You are being cruel. The only contact with people is getting fed once a day? Wtf? No play, no walks, no company?
Don't be a prick. Either get a housesitter or put the dog in a boarding kennel. Don't be a jerk.

If it’s “just a dog” you don’t deserve her

dogs are pack animals. They need company.

I pay $10 a day but it includes cleaning up dog poor and an hour walk. If it was just feeding the dog it would be much less.

Don't be a right ass and pay more for someone to walk your dog!!! Leaving the poor thing in a back yard for weeks with minimal contact is just cruel.

What the actual fuck. You’re leaving your poor dog outside on its own for 2-3 weeks?!

No actually, the neighbour is coming over for 5 minutes to feed the poor dog. Have someone walk him/her. Poor thing

I think you should get someone to walk your dog daily and pay them accordingly. If you have a reliable older child willing to do so, I’d go with that and pay them at least $10 per day.

This is the best option. Depending on the teen and his/her parents they will probably be doing this anyway so the dog won’t get bored and lonely. I know if it was one of my children they would be either playing with the dog for a while or take it for a walk just because they would find it cruel to leave it locked in a yard for 2-3 weeks alone.

Dogs get bored and lonely and become pests with barking, whining, digging and chewing things.

Boarding is very expensive. Get the dog walked and played with as well for $10 per day and it is a bargain if you find a neighbourhood kid who loves your dog (and isn't away a lot with their own family!). Provide good bones like beef legs or lamb shanks and toys your dog likes too. The kid can collect the mail too and even water some plants for you for a bit more.

Or you can get a house sitter for peace of mind so the house looks lived in. :)

The kid will probably spend some time there with the dog too so $150 Is pretty cheap. For a full 3 weeks away $150 would cost you just over $7 a day - it’s a good rate. The kid willove the money and it’s cheaper than paying an older person or putting the dog into a kennel for that amount of time.
