You probably can't claim insurance!

I was always under the impression that if you were going to have insurance take care of repairs then you need a police report. You don't need them to attend but you do need to report it.

I think you would be wise to contact your insurance company and find out what they require as going by answers here, it varies.

I always think err on the side of caution and make a report anyway. As already said, police don’t need to attend and you can fill in a report online.

You don't have to report an accident if the damage is under $3000. So a fender bender likely won't be reported but a Tbone or 6 car pile up probably should be (and cops will be dispatched to this regardless.)

Depends where you are. In ACT you are required to report any accident within 24 hours, if the police haven't attended. There is an online form to fill out.

Police can’t attend every accident love, that’s why the drivers have to exchange details. If there is significant damage to the cars & they need to be towed, a person is killed or seriously injured & needs an ambulance or there’s a serious traffic violation or the other driver doesn’t stop, then the police are involved.

You can make a report and they not attend. Don’t even need to do it the very day of the accident. Just go to the police station and make a statement. No big deal.

Insurance company probably won’t pay. Why wouldn’t you report it to the police?

Some people think it’s only a small dent or can’t see visible damage there could be damage underneath

ANSWER

If there is only a small amount of damage you don’t need to report it to police. If it was a hit and run or the damage is over a certain amount of dollars you do. Call your insurance company and sort it out with them.
