Anyone else not have enough devices for their kids? What have you decided to do?

Answered 4 years ago

Has your school potentially addressed what term 2 looks like ? We are in the public system and may need 10+hours per child each week(primary school), on a device. I’m thinking we may need to buy one, even though this is not a good time financially. They don’t have one, but would use mine.. and working three days a week, it would have to be crammed in to the other days of the week. Just wondering how everyone else is thinking right now..?

My yr 2 son will be using my old laptop because they're easier to work on than a device. I don't expect he'll need it constantly - more for accessing content and communication.

Also being public our school has a non-technology option to allow for students who can't afford devices so ask if you can't.
Thankfully my son's teacher is all over it & asking what works for us.

If anyone has any ideas on how to teach my kindy-aged DD I'm listening! It's really difficult to find stuff & early education is critical.

A lot of play based learning. Cooking, counting games, drawing then get her to label what’s in the drawing (spelling, lettering, fine motor skills), use whatever her school/kindy uses for phonics (reading eggs, jolly phonics on YouTube), sing songs, do some simply science experiments (changing the colour of a white flower with food colouring, vinegar and bicarb volcano). Play dough, slime, kinetic sand can all help with sensory and fine motor control. You will find a lot to do to keep her learning and keep her entertained.

Thank you so much. That tells me what I need. It's really difficult to find curriculum ideas. I was told this morning the kindy are trying to organise some kind of video chat sessions. No idea what though!

Ask the school for help, our school has been amazing and let all the kids without devices bring home their school laptops so it's only my kindy and preschooler to share our laptop and iPad. They also supplied big printed work packs.

I have a $40 printer from the post office, it connects to my phone and I can print out colouring in pages, recipes and activities for the kids. I buy ink off eBay - 2x full sets for under $20 . Really helpful now

My daughter has her school laptop and my boys have an iPad. I have a laptop but I need it for uni, although they are allowed it when I’m not using it as long as it is only for school stuff.

In your situation I would wait until we hear more then go and either zippay or Afterpay a laptop or tablet, or look into if you can hire or borrow one from somewhere. If you reach out to your family and friends someone might have an old laptop, computer or tablet they are no longer using and could lend you until the kids go back to school.

After pay? Take money out of super? Ask grandparents for early Xmas present money?

We have galaxy tablets which are cheaper than iPads, and I just bought them a Bluetooth keyboard online for $60 each and so far they work great. I have 2 kids and only one laptop so rather than tag team on it, they can sit and do work and I can help them both at once

I have 4 school kids to manage. My 2 teens have their phones for minor things to do. But I have all my kids rotate amongst the laptop, desktop and book work. We're in public schooling as well.

My eldest has an ipad. We brought our youmgest an ipad in preparation. It will be easier to school them at the same time rather than holding it up to share

My oldest two have laptops as they needed them for uni and year 10. My year 7 kid is Using her iPad which we had to buy for primary school. So we are doing ok. You’re probably better off buying another device because it looks like all of term two will be done online.
