How do you plan for baby have a nap earlier than usual so that she can be alert and happy before baby swimming?

Answered 5 years ago

FTM here so a bit clueless. My 4 month old has baby swimming at 10.30am this week. She usually has her 2nd 30 min nap at that time. How can i make her have the nap a little earlier so that she is happy and alert for the swimming?

I thought babies weren’t supposed to swim til 6 months- something about being able to regulate body temp/ their skin being sensitive to Chlorine .....

I have a 4 month old too and he sleeps amazingly in the baby carrier. I'd make her first nap a tiny bit later then go for a walk with baby in the carrier and try make her sleep longer so she doesn't need that second nap

I’d be careful starting swimming lessons with a bub that young in the middle of winter. Lots of bugs around.

Actually, that’s a good point. Viruses seem to be rife at the moment. We waited until summer with our two, they were a similar age to yours. Good luck.

It’s the perfect age to start swimming lessons.
Waiting longer could potentially impact bubs and how they react and cope with lessons and delay actually learning to swim

(Also cold doesn’t get you sick)

To the lady that said cold weather doesn’t cause illness, I understand that (I am a nurse). However there are more viruses around in winter and a young baby has very limited immunity. I personally wouldn’t start a baby that young, but each to their own.

No, delaying swimming lessons by a few months (especially in the case of an infant) will NOT delay learning to swim!!! My mum is a swimming coach and she has always said that the best age to actually learn to swim is 2.5yrs onwards when they can start to take instructions. Water familiarization in young babies is fine, but you can’t teach them to swim at only a few months old!

I’m a swim teacher for the last 25 years
80/90% of my kids will have safety skills by their 1st birthday.
10% will be swimming independently by 2 (no parent assist and able to take breaths)
60% by 2.5 and 98% by their 3rd birthday.

3yos should be on strokes.
I got to a conference every year, I teach new teachers, and have run my own swim school for 12 years. And in all my years iv never heard someone say 2.5 is a good time to start.

What your mum May have meant was from 2.5 is a good age to start strokes, which she is correct.
But the point of infant swim lessons is not to have the infant swimming.
It’s water and environment familiarisation so that from 6-12 months we can work on skills instead of settling a crying more aware baby.
Yes it is an important 3 months over the timeline of your child learning to swim.

You can try just putting her down earlier but honestly most babies are little turds when it comes to that kind of thing, she'd just resist with all her might and then you'd BOTH be cranky & stressed out.

If you had longer to prepare you could try working up to it by making the nap a little bit earlier each day.

How long does the swimming lesson go for? I think she will be fine to just stay awake a bit longer and nap afterwards. Most babies seem to really love being in water and there's a good chance she'll be happy even if she's a bit tired.

Honestly it depends upon your child and their nature. Some children would sleep on the way there in the car. Others wouldn't. I'd personally reschedule to a time which suited my child better.

The water will wake her up. Then she’ll sleep for hours after. Keep that time slot. Or, you could get in the car a bit earlier and she may nap in the car on the way. Put the heater on to make her warm and cosy and relaxed. Sit in the car park with her sleeping right up til lesson time.
