My kid refuses to wipe his own bottom?

Answered 4 years ago

He's going to school next year. At the moment his sitting on the toilet screaming for me & i'm leaving him there because this is getting beyond a joke. Both mummy & daddy have tried to teach him. He's done it before & we were full of praise but he always gets us to do it for him. Any advice?

I must be the only one who never wipes my kids ass unless in nappies. I sat with them, supervised, made sure they knew how to do it. I didn't realise it was so common.

If he's going to school next year, he still has plenty of time to learn. Don't stress too much x

Just leave him till he does it or live him with a shitty bum till he gets sick of it and decides to clean it lol

Lol to this comment. But I agree, when he's smelly point it out to him.
I know he's little now, but I just had a 10year old go through a stage of I'm not using toilet paper or not wiping properly and you can clean my jocks. Until the lazy kid came unstuck and dad started making him scrub his undies and he would cry how dare we make him do something so disgusting.
Guess who wipes properly now.

He’s 4 not 44. Help him. Why do u expect him to wipe his own bottom? Dentists recommend we help our kids brush their teeth till the age of 7,8,9. I think bum wiping would be more difficult for a child to master properly than brushing their own teeth.

Our 4 year old isn't even pooing on the toilet. Be thankful they can do that. Don't be mean and leave him there.

Support him to wipe his own bum and give him praise.

My 4yo doesn’t poo on the toilet either. Both our family doctor and his kindy teacher have said it’s actually quite common and not to worry about it til term 4. If he hasn’t decided to start using the toilet by then, then look into reasons why.

Encourage him to wipe it himself then you 'check'. Lots of praise and encouragement!
I was still wiping my daughter's bottom at 4.5 but then one day it clicked and she has been fine since.
I disagree with the previous comments about leaving him there. What's he going to learn from it? If it's like some of the kids Ive seen at daycare, they just skip wiping and pull their pants up and off they go. You then have the fun of cleaning skiddies off their undies lol!!

Just wipe it. I wiped mine even when she started prep and thought she should have been doing it herself and what will happen when she starts school. She would usually go before school anyways but the times that she needed to go at school she would wipe her own. I put a spare pair of undies in a plastic bag in her bag in case she needed to change them. From there it gave her the confidence to start wiping at home. It was weeks until I realised I had not wiped her bum in a very long time! She just started doing it on her own

Don't give in whatever you do!!!
Let him sit there for an hour if need be. He has to learn. Stay strong mumma!!!

Yes I agree. You could suggest that he does a few wipes than you will..but personally I wouldn’t cave.

This is what I did. I expect we'll have the same struggle for awhile. Thanks

With our 4.5yo currently we say he has to have a go first (a few wipes), then we'll help him.
