Do you work or are you on benefits? And what's your opinion on government handouts for parents who are capable of working but choose not to?

I work full time and study part time on nights/weekends, my son is 8 and it's just the 2 of us at home. Father lives over 1000klms away with his new family but does see son on holidays and pays regular child support. I get $120 a fortnight from centrelink for family tax benefit because I work full time and received CS. I save a small amount per month and we live pretty comfortably. Just wondering what other single parents do.....?

I work full time and I have a husband who also works we have two kids. I don’t have a problem with single parents who are capable of working but stay at home to raise their kids getting government assistance. I would rather it go to them to support their children in a loving home life than a politicians pension.

No one who is capable of working chooses not to work. Its propaganda from the media to blind side you from the top few stealing from us common folk. Humans innately enjoy working and being apart of something.
There are not enough jobs, childcare is too expensive and fulltime childcare is damaging for children's attachment and development. The system is built to keep a poverty line so the people up the top can tell the people in the middle that its the people under the poverty lines fault you're tired and have to work your whole life.

Single Mum of 4, currently unemploed and looking for full time work. In the meantime I get 200 pfn CSand $7 FTB, NO Newstart as I dont meet the criteria apparently, so I have to take any work I can get from cleaning to gardening to babysitting to odd jobs etc to try and have a bit more income. Financially I am struggling immensely with bills mounting.

Single mum of 2. They are 4 and 2 and I'm on the single parent pension and family tax. All up I get about $1400 a fortnight and $16 a fortnight child support because he doesn't work. He doesn't see the kids and moved away so he doesn't have to do anything for them. We live fairly comfortably. I rely on stuff like zip pay to pay for clothes and random expenses so I can gradually pay it off and bills and the rest come out of my payments. I 100% support welfare payments to those who need them and I will be looking at going back to work once youngest starts school. I actually have my old boss ask me when I can start working again every time I see her because she misses me lol.

Thanks for the honest response. At 4 & 2 it's probably not even worth going back to work with the cost of childcare for 2 children - you would probably be going backwards. Great work for doing it alone, I know its not easy. Keep moving forward girlfriend x

I recieve around $700 a fortnight in FTB and my husband works full time.
I study and look after my 3 year old at home, plus my older children who are now at school full time.
I would love to return to work part, but my husband and I keep on crunching thr numbers, and we would probably be worse off financially after I factor in daycare, hubbys reduced hours so he can do school pick up, loss of FTB etc.
So I will wait until I've finished studying and my 3 year old is in school full time.
I do sometimes feel guilty receiving FTB, but I figure it is only temporary and I will pay it back in taxes once I'm back at work.
Plus I try and help out at the kids school a lot so I'm hopefully giving back a bit.

Yes I have 4 kids and that includes rental assistance as we rent privately.
I wasn't eligible for anything until I resigned from work after my 3rd child.

We could get rental assistance too but we're living with family atm & don't want them to have to declare it.

I guess my lifestyle isn't excessive then.
I work Monday-Friday, I still save, I pay all bills on time, I bought my car outright, we have two family holidays a year, we like outdoor activities which are usually free anyway or the cost of a national park entry, I sometimes budget for groceries and sometimes I can't be bothered and buy whatever, I don't smoke, I don't drink, and I probably get takeout once a fortnight, or maybe weekly if I'm lazy. I'm very lucky. Tomorrow I need to pay $500 for OT fees, which I've taken from my savings. My savings isn't huge but it's substantial enough if I have an emergency.

House cleaning jobs and hundreds of house cleaners fighting for them in each area that has high unemployment. Good luck getting enough work to stay off centrelink.

Yeah I’ve done those through a company, didn’t get paid, had to use my own car. Always chasing up money from people. You have to keep track of all the income for tax, buy your own cleaning products and pay a service fee to said company for EVERY house you cleaned... that is why I’m studying!

I really hope for your sake that the rug is not pulled out from under you and you get to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes.

The reason why the house cleaning job is on the side is because it takes ages to build customers up and it doesn't pay that well. Great if you need a second income and can wait for it to build up.

Nothing wrong going back to work when baby is 12 weeks old
I am working to buy my baby a house for later in life and save money for him

Your kids won’t have jobs or buy a house or rent without sharing with 3 people

I am securing my sons future as much as I can
Later in life I can take extra leave
I have 9mths of retention leave and 6mths long service leave
When my son is 3 he and I will go overseas for 12 weeks to visit family and hubby will join us for 6 weeks and we will all come home together

Single mum of 2 (10 & 12) on new start. Studying atm so hopefully get a job from it. I have been trying to get work for the past 18mths. I receive CS very sporadically and he is not in their life at all, he doesn’t take then over night or help at all. At most he sees them for an hour or 2 every 8 or 12 weeks. It makes finding work that much harder.

With new start I need to do 20 job applications per month ( I do more than that) and have to attend regular meetings with the job provider... that is not very helpful in providing a job.

It really hard financially and my main focus is getting work.

I have been there and it really is hard. Newstart can't support a family. Biggest mistake they made was changing it. Yes Mums should have work but when we are unemployed it shouldn't mean we also become homeless and rely in charities for food and pay the power. Rent alone was 370 a week which I got while I was working, then unexpectedly lost my job and that $370 was most of what I was entitled to from Centrelink.

I have a concession card so that helps with utilities. I also pay a set amount every 2 weeks on electricity and at this stage I am in credit there.

I meal prep and buy in bulk. I don’t have credit cards or any loans that I need to pay. My biggest expense is rent, it is just 3 of us and we don’t eat much so groceries is about $100 a week. I shop for specials on cleaning stuff and make use of Aldi. I plan really well if I know there is a big bill coming up I put money away for it.

We have a good and happy life I just want a bit more breathing room and to spoil the kids every now and then.

I'm a single mum. My youngest is 6. I dont have a lot of support so it's just me bringing up my children. Dad chooses when to parent but has moved to another state for his gf. I have always worked up until last year when I decided to study to advance my career. I do not work at all at the moment. My children have really benefited from me being home; school drop off, pick up, reading groups, attending school events, after school activities. I am able to do all this because of government benefits. I am very grateful. It's only until I finish my course though and then I will be working fulltime again. My children know that the situation will change then.
Benefits that SP's recieve are not enough for many to want to keep pumping more kids out so they can stay home. Which is fair enough because that's not what the benefits are meant for. I dont feel judged by people for deciding to give up fulltime work for study as a single parent because I have a plan in place.
