Brittany Higgins...what's everyones thoughts on this?

Answered 3 years ago

There is seems to be a lot of blame game going on around this, there are also a ton of questions on how does this even happen in the offices of our nations leaders (WTF). Why are staffers getting black-out drunk, why is security so relax, why is this conduct even happening in the first place!

I think she made the choice not to go to the police. She was fully supported. She can't be crying about it now. She has an agenda.

I can’t understand why you wouldn’t take this to the police. Why keep it quiet for so long? Sadly i think she has an agenda also.

Whoa... there could be multiple reasons she didn't go to the Police. Not being believed, being embarrassed that it happened, losing her job, not wanting anyone to know... She was quite young also. It can be very intimidating. You can not believe what can happen, particularly when it involves people of power. Once you go to the Police, whatever happens from that moment onwards is out of your control. Have some empathy. These kinds of comments is part of the readon why rapes go unreported!

I was rapped 24 years ago, have never reported it, but always thought about it. She is brave for reporting it now and not living with it for another 20 + years like i am.

Staffers get drunk because they can. It's free booze & happens in every industry. It's NEVER an excuse for rape or any inappropriate behaviour, sexual or otherwise.

Some rape happens, imo, because no one is taught what consent really means. The men denying it likely think they did nothing wrong (doesn't make it ok). The strongest part of this movement I can see is about education & support so everyone knows whats acceptable & support for coming forward.

For the 'why didn't she report' nasties... You are the reason. Because you don't believe us or want to deal it personally or the bad publicity for companies or political parties. Because women lose our careers or friendships for daring to report the truth. I know. I was raped by a friend's brother as a teenager. I said no so many times but he kept going, saying it's ok, you'll enjoy it..... I never asked for attention, or even liked him. He knew exactly what he was doing. I never reported because I knew I'd be called a slut at school, my own mother would blame me for upsetting her day, I'd lose everything & be ostracised & whispered about, but nothing would happen to him - he'd be the victim. It still affects me, but telling anyone is pointless because I'd be 'just looking for attention' (which I hate). Now THAT culture has to change.

Equally, we have to stop false rape reports. I know of one right now, which has been disproved beyond doubt (girl lied for attention, there's no doubt, I promise), but it's ruined a good man's life & utterly broken him.

Because they are humans and the expectation that should conduct themselves at a level above and beyond everyone else is flawed. You think just because it’s Canberra that they should be little angels? What a laugh.
