Unwell after miscarriage

Answered 4 years ago

Trigger warning - I do apologise if this is a sensitive subject.

I had a miscarriage on Thursday morning, went to hospital. Was sent home without pain relief, still having consistent contractions every few minutes and I had retained a lot of placenta/pregnancy tissue etc.
The plan was for me to have a D&C then all of a sudden I was being sent home to pass it naturally.
It was not a good hospital experience.
4 days on, I’m sleeping 20 hours a day, utterly exhausted, can barely do anything. Massive headache I can’t get rid of.
Obviously I’m terrified of infection since I did not pass everything I was meant to.... but I can’t just work out if this Is this all Just normal symptoms following a miscarriage?

I’m so glad you’ve gone back to the hospital, even if only to gain reassurance. I hope you have a better experience than the first time round.

Please go to the hospital do not wait. U could have retained products and the body once it is done with the placenta and there is no baby, whether it be due to birth or miscarriage, can actually start attacking itself. It sees the placenta as a foreign object that shouldn’t be in the body. Please just go check it’s better to be safe than sorry. I gave birth and they told me they had removed all of the placenta and sent me home after 2 days. It was horrible I was so unwell even while in hospital and I kept telling them yet they wouldn’t listen, one midwife even went as far as to tell me I was depressed because I kept telling her something was wrong. Finally someone listened and ultrasound showed a lot of placenta was left they rushed me pretty quick into surgery to clean it all out. When I woke up i was a different person I had no tears left and I just felt better and lighter like a new person.

I’m so sorry for your loss 😢
I would go back to a hospital and get checked, go to a public hospital emergency department and they’ll be able to do an ultrasound and check for retained products. Especially if you feel unwell, any fever, if you’re concerned about the colour, amount and/or odour of any discharge. You still might need a D&C.
I’m not sure about the fatigue, it might be normal, but I certainly didn’t have any fatigue or feel unwell when I had my miscarriage. Mine was very early pregnancy though, only about 5 weeks. I’m guessing you were a bit further along.

No fever, but I just feel so unwell. The fatigue is killing me.
I wasn’t sure if this is normal or not, I appreciate your reply.
