Organised people - how do you grocery shop?

Answered 4 years ago

I, far too often, find our cupboards bare and need to do a daily run to the shops for food. I used to do a once a week big shop, whether that be in store or online for delivery. But it's such an overwhelming task that I loathe doing it. We're a big family and trying to meal plan, price match, and order the shit is so daunting. In store would mean taking all of the little ones with me (no).
Do you order your stuff weeks in advance? Do you wander the aisles? Do you meal plan first or just whatever takes your fancy?
I know price matching is unusual but I try to save as much as possible.
Unfortunately, bulk buying isn't an option (lack of storage - seriously, my kids or husband would pull shit out and open it and just wreck shit- and lack of initial outlay money).
Help me please, I need tips to get my shit together. This daily pop out to the shops is expensive and chaotic.

On a Friday night I work out what were eating the following week.
I write down what we need to make it all.
Get it delivered by woollies (I find them far more reliable that Coles in my area) at the 5-8am timeslot on a Sunday. As I unpack it I prepare it (fresh stuff) so as I put it in the fridge, it’s ready to get out and use. For example if we are having a stir fry one night and a casserole another, I cut some carrots into thin stir fry strips and others just into circles and put them in ziplocks in the fridge. Some meals I just prepared and pop in the oven Sunday morning and either put in the fridge or freeze if they’re for later on in the week.

I also have some staples that I need each week. I have them saved as ‘weekly’ list at both Coles and woollies, I order it from wherever its cheapest, it varies depending on what’s on special. Break, milk, cereal, ham etc.

1. Meal plan, 2. Click & collect. I am NOT an organised person but I can manage it. Makes life so much easier and saves soooo much time.

And money! I started doing this and literally halved my grocery bill. Didn't realise how many impulse buys I would get.

The first few times it took me a bit to do the online shop. But it was still quicker than doing it in store. Everything is categorised and you can search for things. You can also go into previous orders and select the things you have brought before. I find online so much easier than in person. You still get all the specials, less impulse buys and easier to stay in budget as well. The last time I did an in-store grocery shop we spent about $50 above what we would have doing it online. Online is what suits us best.

I find the Coles website much easier to use BUT I've had other people swear by the woolies one so try both & see which you find easier.

I have a Coles, woolies and Aldi a 5 minute drive from my house. I go through the catalogues and write down all the specials. I’ll do a Coles shop one day, then later in the week do a woolies shop. I only go to Aldi maybe once a month. I have a white board on fridge where we write down whatever we’ve used up and need replacing. I also meal plan for the week.

Grocery pickup is not just for those that can’t get their groceries, it also is a great resource for those that are organized and on a budget. I can see exactly what I need at home and get everything in the order that I want.

I keep a notepad on the fridge. The entire family add to the list whenever they notice that we are out of/close to being out of things. Once a week I do a large online shop. I plan meals for the week.

I used to just buy things as needed but found that it cost more in terms of petrol/time and extras each shop so now just do one big shop each week.

This is my go to as well. I meal plan, add things that are out (tomato sauce, butter), and always leave the last day unplanned to use up leftovers and randoms. It works out SO much cheaper than getting what you need on the day. Also, if we have a roast Beef/Lamb one day, we get a casserole in the crockpot of the leftovers the next day - just add extra veggies and breadrolls. Roast chicken becomes chicken soup, Spag Bol becomes toasted sandwiches etc.

Do a basic shop at Aldi. Meal plan in advance for 4 or 5 meals say spag bol, tuna mornay, tacos, meat patties, casserole/soup and snitzel all with some salad and veg. Grab some half price specials from Coles too

We meal plan over the weekend and then I pop in an online order to pickup on a Wednesday. We also have a list on our fridge that everyone writes on once we are low on something we regularly have on hand. Occasionally we still pop in to the shops to grab bits and pieces if we've had/or having people over. We don't necessarily shop for the best price all the time but because of the meal planning we save money anyway.

I have a whiteboard in my fridge and the things I don’t buy weekly that I need I write in there and before my shop day I write my list. I don’t really meal plan but I do have things I cook weekly or two weekly and so I always have those things that I need on hand. Unless you get home delivery then yeah shopping is a bit of a chore. But if you have a plan at the supermarket and know where everything is then it won’t take you too long.
