I think Christians have been a subdued force in Australia. They don’t yell, scream, become abusive or rock the boat. Israel posted a QUOTE from the Bible. Probably his reading for the day. Christians believe the Bible is God breathed. They have every right to those beliefs - just as others choose not to. I have to read what some idiot has put in the school curriculum about gender dysmorphia for year 5 students - and it is their OWN opinion and it is going to affect my kids. Folau posted something from an accepted text written 2000 years ago and he lost his livelihood and has been attacked for his beliefs. Christians are now raising their voices through donations to fight this injustice. They will turn him into a martyr - an icon for Christian freedom. The constant negative media and personal attacks on him are turning more and more people to his aid. All voting with their pockets, their Government votes, and the choices they are making with news broadcasters.

If you want to be standing on the majority at the end of this, I suggest you get over your rants and stand up for the person who is victimised - like you would for any other person who didn’t happen to hold a Christian belief. Imagine someone quoted the Bill of Rights - all men are created equal - and then the Disability service caused you to be sacked for your biased hate speech and ignorant comments. Don’t kill the messenger.

The last quote that he posted before his sacking was not a direct quote from the bible, it was a list of those that were going to hell! He could have chosen any number of positive messages from the bible to share but instead he chose to share a message that condoned and judged majority of the population. Like most religious people he is a hypocrite who seems to just pick and choose what parts of the bible he will live by...obviously he does not have an issue with tattoos, greed and judgement of his fellow man!

I think he's being an idiot BUT it bothers me that there are rules at all about what people are "allowed to say" now, especially about their religious beliefs (which I think are nonsense, but that's beside the point). Saying someone's going to hell is meaningless. It's like he thinks they won't make it to the Egyptian afterlife. It doesn't matter. It's not the same as saying he hates them, discriminates against them, or means them harm. Why isn't he allowed to say it?

I am an atheist but I believe in freedom of religion. Someone should be allowed to say "in my Pastafarian religion people who don't believe in the noodle god are going straight to eternal menstruation", without fear of being punished or losing their job.

While homosexuality isn’t a crime, acting on those urges are a choice too. It’s the same as premarital sex or having an affair, you are acting out your urges. I don’t think that suppressing normal sexual desire is right or healthy but for highly religious people they believe it is required to show some sort of devotion to God. Again, it’s all bullshit but who am I to judge others choices in faith as long as they don’t hurt anyone else. Israel is just trying to do his “Christian duty” by spreading the word of the bible and if people didn’t like it they could have just scrolled passed. It isn’t like he locked them in a elevator and started screaming his ideology at them.

REPLY

^ Folau also had a choice. He chose to breech the terms of his contract. Willingly and knowingly. Now he has the consequences of it.

REPLY
But did he really breach his contract by being discriminatory? He simply said that if you are “this” my fairytale tells me you will go to a fictional place because this imaginary all mighty being doesn’t agree with you sucking another man’s dick or getting wasted on a Saturday night and fucking some random in the bathroom at the club. It would only be discrimination if in fact hell did exist and that should be taken up with God, not some footballer repeating the “rules”.

REPLY
^ apparently he did. Hence why he got kicked out.

REPLY
He did by according to his employer and sponsors, but will a court see it the same? If they do, does that mean that speaking about any “indecent” behaviour which will take you to “hell” will now be classed as hate speech? Will churches, mosques and other religious places of worship then be unable to preach about what will send you to hell? Will the bible, quran and other religious texts have to be rewritten as to not offend anyone? Does ruling this as hate speech and discrimination now mean that the general consensus the Australian government and Australian courts is that there is a heaven, hell, god and devil? As a secular society will this drag us back into being a Christian society?

ANSWER
The clubs have to stick by what is in the contract. They had to take action. He was warned repeatedly about saying things out of line, and he kept doing it.
Insulting LGTBI people is against the law, plain and simple.
If they did not take action against him it would create a precedent that would make it difficult to take action against the other, more usual form of misbehaviour that footballers get up to.
So he has backed them into a corner. And brought this on himself.
The biggest issue is does freedom of religious expression include the right to insult anyone who doesn't fit within your religious world view, and I think that's why all the extreme right wing religious people have energetically funded him. (Both Christian and probably Muslim).
ISIS supporters and preachers would be watching this with great interest, as if Folau had won, they would use it to justify the right to start up hate preaching again.
If Mundine was in a rugby club he would have to sign the same sort of contract, and he simply wouldn't be able to keep his mouth shut and would have landed himself in trouble within months. Perhaps that's why he is in boxing.
Personally I think he is probably a good man, but preaching what he believes in a way that ignores the law has got him into trouble.

Replies

REPLY

While I don’t completely disagree with you. The real question here is this:
Is paraphrasing a religious text hate speech; and if so, does this also include the others that were listed on his post?
Does telling someone to “go to hell” now class as hate speech, or it is still going to be a figure of speech?

I think this will be an interesting court case because it’s really going to change a lot one way or another. It won’t make it possible though for ISIS to preach hate if he wins though, as hell is not exactly proven to be real but blowing up 100 people is. It is also going to show if society and the courts believe hell and heaven, as well as god, being real, not just religious folk tales.

REPLY
^ Just to add.
We can also see that RA, their sponsors and those who support this or believe it is hate speech must believe in hell, heaven and god. If they don’t, then they have created an issue over something they don’t even believe in.

I don't agree with Folau. I don't think that his message was in anyway representative of a good christian and that he was following the bibles or Jesus's teachings at all. Just pick and choosing the bits he likes best.
In terms of his contract, he was employed by Rugby Australia. He had clauses in his contract that he broke purposefully.
In my town, there have a been a few teachers who have been dismissed from their jobs teaching at Catholic schools because they don't fit their beliefs usually because they are LBGQTI. If they can be fired because they don't hold with the beliefs of their employers then why can't Folau be fired for the same. And why would he want to work for an organisation that doesn't uphold his christian beliefs? Go and find a christian rugby union, they won't pay as much though. Which makes him a hypercite in my eyes.

Although I didn’t entirely agree with the way Israel’s message was posted with regards to emphasis ... I entirely agree with the Bible and believe as a supposedly “Christian” country it is absolutely appalling that he has been persecuted for posting a Bible verse on his page. For anyone who knows how intricately the human body is and how all our systems function - it is preposterous to question the existence of a higher power or deity. However, I also understand that not everyone has had the opportunity or capacity to experience or see some of the experiences I have had and it may be harder for them to recognise and appreciate this. Although I believe Israel’s message was conveyed in a hard manner - the story here should be of love. Not of threat of damnation. However, like all good things there ARE consequences to rejecting that love. God’s love. The love bestowed on ALL human beings created in God’s image. The love that is so powerful and strong that despite the fact that we are humans and fallible - we are STILL loved. Accepting that love and recognising ourselves for what we are; sinners - is all we need for redemption. And that of itself is a miracle. Once you have truely realised the gift EVERY human can experience you won’t need to fear death. To wonder why you are on earth for, to put your treasures on earth where moth and rust corrupts them and thieves break through and steal. And that is where you learn to do good out of desire to please God - not make your way into heaven or avoid hell. Out of love. And if your story is not out of love... it is out of customs, rules and regulations. And these have no meaning but human meaning.

I personally don't care what he preaches in his own church. But (so I'm told) the bible also says that one shall not tattoo or mark ones body!!!! He sure does have a lot of tattoos!!!! He is also a very greedy man. He has the money to fight this in court. So he should use his own money, but he is too greedy to do that. I feel for those sick children who are fighting for their lives and fighting to get funding to help save their lives. He does not give one bit of consideration to those people as all he is thinking of his himself. He is a well known sportsman and kids look up to him. He should just shut his mouth up and not said anything and all would have been ok. I have no respect for him as a person what so ever. What kind of person does that? Also, I think you will find lots of people have plenty to say about Mundine and his views.

REPLY

The real question here was if that clause was in his contract, or if he is telling the truth and signed the contracted without that clause in it.

I would also go as far to say that most major sponsors and sporting organisations share similar contracts with similar clauses. If this is the case Mundine would have broken several contracts unless he also said he did not want those clauses included.

As for the legal fees, with the appeal process and the type and number of lawyers he will require, the amount of time he will require them, as well as court fees, $3m wouldn’t be that much of an overreach.
