Feeling bad about chasing family for money?

Answered 4 years ago

So I pay a family members phone bill already but also they wanted an expensive household item of mine which I gave to them. They said they would pay me for it but haven’t. Feeling guilty if I ask for some money but I have a large bill home maintenance emergency come up. would you ask?

Why are you paying their phone bill? How about you not pay that any more and recoup your money?

There is no ideal world. You can't afford it so don't feel bad and just ask them politely. They should never have taken it if they couldn't buy it so it's on them being adults not you!

Absolutely. If they can't pay, get the item back on the same day, don't let them say I'll pay in 2 days. Although I wouldn't be surprised if they've sold it for cash. Never do any dealings with them again.

Yes. If you don't insist it'll keep happening. I'd advise finding another way to pay your bill though because it's possible they will find excuses to delay until you give up. Usually if you have to ask they had no intention of repaying.

This is exactly why we give the impression we have no spare money. Everyone knows it's bullshit but will not ask because they know the response.

Of course. Do you want to be a doormat? Even family members can take advantage of someone’s goodwill. And being family is no excuse to not pay a debt. Nor is being family no reason not to ask for said debt to be paid.

God yes. Honey don't be such a pushover and don't feel guilty. If anything they should feel guilty. I bet their intention all along has been not paying for it. Stand up for yourself, demand the money or the item back and never do it again. Good luck xx
