Have you gone off the pill, reacted badly, gone back on the pill and been fine again?

Answered 5 years ago

I’ve been on pill for 20 years. Doc wants me to come off as I’m 43 now. I’m scared my acne will return and my periods will be irregular and I’ll get bad cramps, all which I had before I started the pill. If that all happened would going back on the pill immediately fix things or will I have stuffed everything up by stopping it in the first place. Anyone gone off pill and regretted it?

I stopped after my husband had a vasectomy. Didn't see the point. I'd been taking it for 14 yrs. The first few periods were hard as my body adjusted but now it fine. But I previously did not get too bad cramps or anything and I'm only early 30s. Is the doc thinking more for peri-menopause/menopause? Ultimately it is upto you. Take their advice under consideration but if you are happy with taking it - continue, unless of course the suggestion stems from serious medical concerns. Also, remember your body has changed a lot in the last 20 years.

Doc just says not good for older women. I don’t drink or smoke, I’m a healthy weight, I have no health problems.

My doctor said this to me also after 20 years. He said it can do long term damage by thickening your arteries. I do believe with a good diet and exercising this will help but why risk it? Once arties are blocked it can restrict your blood to your heart. You can get blood clots, gave a stroke or heart attack. Maybe ask for some alternatives to the pill?

That is a useful comment, thankyou. Doc never said that stuff to me, simply said women should not be on the pill once they hit 40.

Why is the doctor asking you to come off it? Unless there is a serious chance of stroke, dvt, etc why would they ask you to come off it? I can not take any hormonal contraception as it contributes to depression. If you are happy, and there are nonsignificant risks to your health then I'd get another opinion before stopping

Because she is 43 and maybe using it just to control acne and everything and maybe doctor believes there is menopause or something close by and wants to naturally monitor. Doctors don’t tell you to come off for no reason

OP here, the doctor told me that women in their 40s should not be on the pill. He said as we get older the risks become higher. He asked questions and looked at test results that show I am not a high risk in any category but that it was simply not recommended for women once they hit 40. I’m not on it to control acne, I simply just stayed on it to prevent pregnancy. I like that I have a regular period and can skip it if I want so just kept taking it. But he has me concerned.

So fear that you might get pimples is keeping you taking it even though it might potentially harm you? I'm not sure why this is such a hard choice for you.

^^ don’t be so fucking rude. I’m not scared of getting pimples for fuck sake, I meant all of the issues that came before I went on the pill which yes included acne, not pimples, there’s a massive difference there. Severe cramps, heavy irregular bleeding, cystic acne, anemia.... I just kept it brief so stupid people like you wouldn’t think my question was too complicated. The doc didn’t give me a reason besides my age. If you read my comments I am not in any high risk category. No other doctor in the last three years told me I should go off it so that’s why I’m asking people’s opinions here. If the question bothers you then don’t comment. This is a forum to get advice from people, not stupid comments.

Totally opposite for me. I went off the pill after 20 years. I was very hormonal on the pill with crazy mood swings. I am much more level now, I don’t get acne and after 6 months of irregular periods that has settled. I also notice that I don’t have fog brain. I am thinking very clearly like I did when I was a young uni student. I even went back and completed a masters. My husband had a vasectomy do win win.

No. I was on it for 20ish years. I went off it because I was getting married thought I might have problems getting pregnant being older. Nope got preggers before the wedding opps...but no side effects. I loved not having to take it anymore. No more unnecessary chemicals in me.

"unnecessary chemicals" water is a chemical.

Yes, but water would be considered a 'necessary chemical' I'm sure

I had really bad cramps when young but when I went off the pill they didn’t return. I went back on the pill but during my thirties I got a few side effects I didn’t used to have like bad anxiety and dermatitis/candida down below. I’m off for good now and those side effects went away. It might have something to do with changing hormones as you age.

I was advised to get off the pill at 32 as it was causing side effects such as high blood pressure, flaring my PCOS and thyroid issues. I am now on the marina and its the best decision I ever made
