Newly single mum needs advice

Answered 4 years ago

Hey guys,
I’m a new single mum and for the time being I am having to go on Centrelink.
I honestly never thought I would be in this situation so I’m needing a little help.
How much do you roughly pay for rent weekly?
Is it hard living off single payment are you able to make it work?
Would love anymore advice!

Thank you!

Hi
Good luck with it all
You will get child support and family tax benefit too. It will take some budgeting but you will get there. If you struggle ask to see a social worker at Centrelink. There are social equity housing suppliers you should apply for, but the waits are long. Apply anyway.
I am working now but I was on SSP, FTB and recieved child support and was paying $360 a week rent. I cooked all but one night a fortnight and made it work, kids both do sport outside of school and didn’t miss out on anything ... mind you I certainly did but that’s ok. I studied the first year I left and started working part time short there after as a carer and in home support person which I could do whilst kids were at school.
Part time income helped a lot.
You will need to put some money aside in case of emergencies so try and save a little in case you need to move or something unexpected pops up

Good luck

Your welcome! Good luck. I really suggest the social housing option. You will probably need to wait for a house but the house is more or less guaranteed for life and at no more than 30% of your income. Its been a life saver for me having affordable housing and security. It took me 6 years to get a place though so keep in contact with them and if your circumstances change or you become at risk of homelessness speak to them straight away.

Would still apply.
Totally worth it if your a single mum long term even if you go off and earn a wage you can earn a decent wage before you become ineligible.
Offers a greater sense of stability than private rentals.

I work part time, but I came on pps recently too. I pay $620 rent a fortnight, but u get some rent assistance, and at the moment an extra $250 fortnight corona virus supplement. Which helps! My daycare is subsidised heavily so the government covers 85% of my daycare fees for the days I am at work.
I think the maximum you are entitled to is $700 and something a fortnight for single parent, (it decreases if you are working and earning but the cut off is like $2000 a fortnight I think) plus family tax benefit, then you also will receive child support. So make sure you contact them to get the ball rolling for that as you lose family tax benefit if you don't have a claim for child support in place ☺
