Smelly bedroom...

Answered 5 years ago

How do I get rid of that smelly bedroom smell? You know that smell that smelly like 10 people have slept in it but in reality it's only 2 people. The house is closed up coz it's cold and we have a wood fire in the loungeroom trying to heat the whole house so windows open isn't an option.

In winter I open the windows during middle of the day, with the covers thrown back and ceiling fan on full pelt. Only for a couple of hours, then close the room up again.
During warmer months I have all windows and doors open.
The other advice here is good, especially about washing everything, including mattress protector.
Have a spare mattress protector too, so you can do a complete change of bedding, even when you can't wash immediately.

I don't want to sound like an arsehole but I don't know the smell you mean, my bedroom just smells like fabric softener to be honest because of all the clothes hanging up in the closets. Maybe you might need a new mattress? Or to have your doona and carpets dry cleaned?

As others have said, open the house during the day (warm clothing). And also, having some indoor plants, the real kind, no the plastic kmart ones, helps keep odours at bay. They literally absorb the stank and shit out fresh air. That's their job.
And don't be afraid to have your mattress cleaned by a professional. Lots of pillows are machine washable so that's easy.

Wash your sheets and blankets in hot water with bicarb, add vinegar to the rinse cycle. Spritz your mattress with clear liquor that's 50% abv or better, unflavoured. Throw bicarb down on your carpets, wait 30 mins and vacuum, try a dehumidifier, put dryer sheets or sachets of potpourri in drawers and closet shelves

Find the shoes. Smelly shoes can go through the whole house. Either bag them or leave them outside.

Open up the house. Just for half an hour or so. You should do this every day anyway, for the health of your home.
