Has anyone done 'The Big Lap' with high school aged kids?

Answered 5 years ago

We have the set up - we do a lot of big outback trips and camping, dont need advice on that. We are looking at a bit of a change and may have the opportunity to take 6-12 months off work and would love to do a lap of australia. But our kids would be yr 7 and yr 10. Our child in year 10 is what concerns me the most. Can you do high school via correspondence?

Yes, some private schools offer online learning. Public high schools don't offer it, only in certain circumstances if you were living in a place that doesn't have an accessible high school or serious illness or injury stopped them attending school. But travelling families have to look at private options.

Considering so many uni's offer fully online degrees you would think secondary school couldn't be too far away

What do the children think? Do you think they will be happy away from their friends for that period of time? I remember friends going away for long periods in high school and they found it quite devastating. But obviously each child will react differently in this regard.

Friends are doing this at the moment, there are a few different options for school. It's an amazing opportunity and the kids will get a lot out of it. Talk to your kids teachers and google will also give you lots of options.

As great as it would be doing it I think the kids schooling is more important. Year 10 is such an important year as it sets them up for senior schooling and year 7 is setting themselves up for high school.

Maybe speak to the principal of the school about it. The experiences they would have would be great so if there is a way to do school by correspondence then I would definitely consider it. You could even maybe look into homeschooling for the year - I dont know how it works or if it would but thats another way for them to not miss out on the learning.
