Bushfires - No Insurance

Answered 4 years ago

Keep hearing on the news people are losing their properties with No Insurance.

I find this insanity. You would think this would be a priority.

Anyone here not have insurance for those home or contents? Why?

*If you can't afford insurance you can't afford a home.

Many people don't have insurance because of the cost. Or when they are struggling it is the first thing to go in favour of day-to-day living expenses. Not always a 'choice'.

GoFundMe is an American for-profit crowdfunding platform that allows people to raise money for events ranging from life events such as celebrations and graduations to challenging circumstances like accidents and illnesses.

Most people use GoFundMe to raise money for themselves, a loved one, or a friend in need during life's most important moments. This can include anything from medical expenses, education costs, trips & aspirations, volunteer programs, youth sports, funerals & memorials, or animals & pets.

As a renter, you can insure your contents and the house owner should have their home insured.

I understand why some people don't have insurance. If I needed to choose between feeding my children and insurance, heck, of course I'd scrap the insurance!

The problem here is much deeper.

Politicians choose their own incomes and perks yet there is no safety net for natural disaster???

Come on Aussies, come on.

We can do better than that.

If you have a house, it's a major asset, you get insurance. Why should everyone else (or politicians) pay for someone else's house.
Safety nets for natural disasters is another issue.

As I said, some people cannot afford it.
Have some compassion.

...... wasn't even addressing 'no compassion', as it wasn't stated in above main comment. I absolutely have compassion & will help where I can. My opinion with being insured is still the same, people need to insure their assets & not expect everyone to replace what they've lost, especially in the case of a large asset.

Some insurance companies will reject your application or have much higher prices for higher risk properties so they may have been unable to claim or afford it.

ANSWER

Most of the cheaper companies don't auto cover - or cover at all - major events like bushfire, flood etc. So some might have insurance & think they're covered until they try to claim.

I always had insurance even when I wasn’t well off
Even if it was undervalued inc house contents
$30k is better than nothing

I believe some of these areas are virtually un-insurable for bushfires.
