A close friend of mine was very upset and nearly crying in front of me about some news about his grandma. We have never got this personal. What does this mean?

It means he feels comfortable enough to open up in front of you. Don’t break his trust in you by trying to get in his pants when all he needs is a shoulder to cry on.
