My husband is on 300k+/year and you wouldn’t say we are “rich”. We drive “older” cars and have a modest house etc.

My boyfriend does this to other people. Has an "image".
But I've seen his emails and he has quite a few personal loans.
Red flags.............

Does the image affect you?
If you see him as long term better figure it out!

It bothers me because it's untrue, and I point out I know he's lying all the time. It's mostly about his achievements and skills, tried telling me he was in the army,
his parents were like no he wasn't when I asked them . He just talks himself up. He bought a second car for himself. He said he'd been saving for months. But it was a personal loan. I say why lie, it seems like such an insignificant thing to lie about as well. I can't tell if he's a habitual liar, or a narcissist or what. And who needs two cars?
My concern is what does he tell others about me if he can so easily lie about himself

If the truth doesn't matter for insignificant things, what will it mean to the important ones? Much more than a red flag going on here. Use your common sense.

Nope, I actually try to do the opposite. I am still driving my same car I have had for ages and don't really do much flashy stuff. I just know that everyone I see at school pickup driving a Prado is in debt up to their eyeballs.

You don’t know that. You assume that.

We have a prado because we use it for 4wd trips. Others might spend big on travel. Ours is a 2012 model though so not that expensive but runs great

^^ haha you touched a nerve for some Prado owners there! Now they feel the need to defend their life choices.

Look, most people I know that Drive Prados and Landcruiser 200 series are deep in dept. But it might be a coincidence :-)

I have a tarago. Those things aren't cheap. But people just look at me and assume I'm white trash with kids to different dad's all over the place.
I think Prado just has that stereotype, like me and my half black kids in our van have 😂

Not that we are exceptionally rich but I do the opposite. I hate people knowing we have money. All of a sudden you get asked all these questions, people sook it's not "fair". In conversation I told one friend that we own our cars (it came up, she asked about interest rates etc) and I said we have about $40k in the bank for a second home deposit. And all of a sudden it wasn't fair that we had that money blah blah blah. So now, my mouth is shut. I won't be made to feel guilty we (mainly my husband) earn decent money.

people on this board don't like it when people have money or are doing well.

We earn ok money 150k combined and owns cars and have 70k in the bank.

we appreciate and are blessed to be where we are and have worked hard for it too

We are 'poor' compared to our Dr friends who have a combined income of 900k and have a 2 million dollar house.

People don't like people who are doing better than they are, but people don't like people who are earning lower incomes and in their opinion scrounging off the government for claiming family tax.
You will never win I guess 😂
I think just being humble and an honest person in your life is more important than finances

Agree with this. Pple say you are 'lucky', it's not luck, it's years of 6 days a week and overtime for the both of us, not buying stuff we don't need and making sacrifices

Yep its definitely hard work and being responsible with money that works. Having a budget has been awesome for us too. If you have a low wage then invest in study. get a second job. sometimes you need to make sacrifices to get ahead.

People that have a poor mindset will stay poor because they will always blame others or pull the victim or poor me cards.

You should control your money and not let it control you.

I had a low income, got that second job after doing a 6 month tafe certificate, earned 76k a year, worked 7 days a week between two jobs, plus double shifts where I could, was pretty fucking exhausted all the time for over two years, saw my 3 small children almost never.
Quit one job, only earn about 40grand but so much happier and get to actually raise my children instead of seeing them for 5 minutes a day and only if they were awake before 6am.
Money isn't everything, you have to do what makes you happy. I guess if money makes you happy then you're doing it right. I love working, but I love my family, I think I have a good balance now. ♥ 😍 ♥ 😍

We are on good money but not as much as what people think. As soon as they here mining they get dollar signs in their eyes. I earn more per hour than my husband and he has 15 years experience with high tech equipment and multiple qualifications. He earns a lot because he works 12 hours per day for 3 weeks straight.

ANSWER

Nope. My husband and pretty much all our friends work in the public service (or one person in a couple), so we're all on 'good' money. They all have a rough idea of what each other would earn just by what level they are. Of course it changes depending on what the other half earns (we'd probably be the lowest as I'm the only sahm in the group) but no-one feels the need to discuss money, show off, or compare assets etc.
